The Queen of Air and Darkness is the arch fey of Magic (especially illusions), Darkness, and Death. Her long-lost true name is never spoken among the fey. Her symbol is a black diamond. Her association with darkness, death, and ravens, has sometimes led to her being termed the "Raven Queen".

The Queen of Air and Darkness is a bodiless, invisible being, but she can be perceived magically as a faerie with pale, angular features, blood-black eyes, and a mane of black hair. She is beautiful, but hers is a terrible, eldritch beauty that chills the bone. The Queen usually appears as cold and utterly emotionless entity.

The Queen's domain in the Shadowfell is a castle known as the Fortress of Memories. It is a place of overwhelming sorrow, overflowing with memories taken from mortals and fragments of dead deities, material objects collected by the shadar-kai and brought to her as gifts, and apparitions of creatures and places associated with strongly emotional stories. Swarms of ravens occasionally fly out of the fortress, taking her cryptic messages to the far reaches of the lands and acting as the Queen's eyes and ears while away.

The Queen was also said to claim a domain in the Shadowfell known as Letherna, a fortress of black ice within a frozen forest through which the souls of the deceased that she has claimed come to their final destination.
