Overview

The Sacking Of Coruscant

Once the beacon of civilization, Coruscant is now a shadow of its former glory. After Emperor Palpatine’s death, Coruscant remained the core of Imperial power, even as the Empire fractured. Key figures such as Grand Admiral Yularen maintained control over the Imperial heartlands, determined to defend the Core from the encroaching New Republic. Yularen entrusted the defense of Coruscant and the surrounding sectors to his subordinate, Admiral Stavar Ulgo, while he led forces on the front lines, including the pivotal Battle of Fondor Shipyards.

However, in 7 ABY, Admiral Ulgo defied Yularin’s direct orders. Instead of holding the line, he launched a surprise attack on Coruscant itself and several other key Core worlds. His betrayal culminated in the infamous Sacking of the Core.

The Imperial Palace was plundered, its vast wealth loaded onto Ulgo’s ships, and vital Imperial facilities across Coruscant were destroyed. Storehouses were raided, and a wave of destruction swept through the upper levels of the planet. One of the most devastating events was the creation of a massive crater that spanned miles and plunged hundreds of levels deep, obliterating an Imperial research facility and killing countless civilians. Parts of Coruscant’s upper levels were torn open, revealing the sky to many lower-level denizens for the first time—though this glimpse of sunlight was a bitter reminder of the devastation above.

Admiral Ulgo, after seizing all he could, fled the broken world. In the wake of his treachery, Grand Admiral Yularen offered no resistance to the New Republic, retreating and leaving only an apology for Ulgo’s actions. The New Republic, upon their arrival, was forced to prioritize humanitarian aid over pursuing the fleeing Imperial leaders. Their anger, however, was firmly directed at Admiral Ulgo, who later declared himself Grand Moff and forged his own power base.

The Aftermath

The damage inflicted on Coruscant was catastrophic. Ulgo’s attack crippled much of the planet’s industrial and commercial infrastructure, leaving the once-thriving capital in ruins. The massive crater carved into the planet's surface became a stark reminder of Imperial betrayal. Reconstruction has been slow and arduous, hindered by the sheer scale of the devastation and the lingering effects of Imperial sabotage.

By 20 ABY, Coruscant remains a world in recovery. While some areas of the planet have been rebuilt, large portions of the upper levels are still scarred, with abandoned towers and shattered infrastructure marking the skyline. Millions of inhabitants from the lower levels, many of whom saw sunlight for the first time in the aftermath of the attack, cling to hope for a brighter future. However, the resentment toward the former Imperial rulers burns fiercely, fueling widespread distrust and calls for justice against those responsible.

A Changed World

Coruscant may one day rise again, but it will never be the same. The scars of the Sacking of the Core are etched deeply into the planet and its people. The devastation has forced the once-unyielding city-world to confront its vulnerabilities, reshaping its identity in the shadow of its former grandeur. Yet, amid the ruins, the resilience of its inhabitants endures—a testament to the spirit of a galaxy striving to heal from the sins of the Empire.
