The Sacking Of Coruscant

Written by Puglord

In the months following the battle of Endor and the death of Emperor Palpatine, shockwaves were sent throughout the Empire.  By and large the chain of command broke down, spreading chaos throughout the Imperial Fleet that the Rebel Alliance would pounce upon. However, while the Alliance won a string of victories as they pushed towards the Core, their progress was ultimately blunted by Grand Admiral Yularen. The ensuing stalemate would last for two years however during this time it became clearer and clearer that the nascent Republic had the upper hand. The situation finally changed when, seemingly sensing an opportunity to launch a decisive strike, Yularen ordered all fleets within the Core to converge on Fondor Shipyards, betting that victory there would turn the tide.

But whilst many admirals heeded the venerable admiral’s call, there was one who didn’t, one who will forever go down in galactic infamy.  Stavar Ulgo was born on Alderaan twenty-six years before its destruction by the Death Star and had been the youngest admiral within the Imperial Navy, an honor bestowed upon him personally by Yularen for his vigor and his staunch loyalty. Even if Wulf himself personally found the turning in of one’s own brother to imperial authorities under suspicion of treason distasteful, it was a powerful display of faith in the Empire. Such a quality was in high demand  after the Battle of Yavin, when Yularen needed capable men he could trust, and often found himself turning to the young admiral time and time again. Stavar’s true chance to prove himself finally came when Yularen entrusted him with the defense of Coruscant shortly after news had reached the two of the Emperor’s death.

Both men had been up late planning a potential defense of the Core when someone had managed to project holos of the second Death Star’s explosion outside their window. While Yularen was abhorred and enraged by the cheering of the masses, guards who saw Admiral Ulgo leave the room after reported he had a cold expression; one of deep thought.

No one, not even Yularen, could have known what darkness had taken root in the young admiral’s heart after seeing those cheers.

And so, two years later, when Yularen requested aid from his right hand for the Battle of Fondor, he would receive only silence until word came of the carnage in the Core. Acting on his own initiative, Ulgo had ordered his ships to burn Coruscant. In short order he eradicated any defense it had in a single decisive blow, pilfered the Imperial Treasury, and left the once great Republic Senate a glassed ruin-turned memorial that it is today.  From there, he’d order his fleet to spread to other worlds and bring further destruction, specifically those that fed Coruscant and the greater Core, to ensure a famine that would consume the system. Finally, he then requisitioned all ships undergoing construction at Kuat Driveyards before personally dismantling in a manner similar to what he had wrought upon the Coruscant.   For weeks his men acted like pirates, sacking and pillaging everything they could before the New Republic could properly react. By the time retribution forces arrived, Ulgo’s forces were gone.

Even thirteen years later, the Core has not completely recovered and the terror of the Sacking was so virulent that even many in the Empire curse the name Stavar Ulgo. Many of the resources the admiral acquired went on to be key to establishing the Domain of Anaxes, creating a powerful and dangerous force that exists as one of the major galactic powers today.

TIMELINE

3 Weeks before the Battle of Fondor Shipyards -  Ulgo decides that remaining in the Core is untenable. He creates a list of his most trusted officers and ones he suspects of working with the Republic, he then begins to subtly shuffle their locations under the guise of preparing for the potential defense of Coruscant.

1 Week before the Battle of Fondor Shipyards -  Ulgo requisitions as much emergency equipment as he can from Coruscant, seizing ships dedicated to putting out fires, droids meant to recover people from wreckages, spare parts needed in case of generators failing, and begins to construct barriers at the lower levels that limit transport all citing a potential upcoming siege.

5 days before the Battle of Fondor Shipyards
- Admiral Yularen sends out a signal to Ulgo requesting he relocate all available forces to prepare for the battle at Fondor Shipyards.  Stavar never returns his communication and begins to sabotage all of Coruscant’s planetary defenses.

2 days before the Sacking
- After receiving word that Yularen was defeated by Admiral Ackbar, Ulgo presses forward with ordering the treasury of Coruscant brought to his flagship and secretly begins evacuation of the majority of Coruscant's wealthy who’ve undergone oaths of loyalty to the Empire.  Finally, as night time descends, a trooper by the name of Captain Illosin receives information of Ulgo’s plans and attempts to inform both the Republic and Republic-sympathizers on the planet of what is to come. He is able to send out a signal before being killed by Death Troopers, causing the Republic fleet to hasten its advance and various planetary officials to try and prepare for what is about to happen.

1 day before the Sacking
- Ulgo finishes evacuating all VIP’s from the planet, consisting of bankers, CEOs, former Senators and any one with connections and loyalty to the Empire. Afterwards, he orders a portion of his fleet to strike a series of farming worlds that help feed Coruscant’s massive population. While he claims that Captain Illosin’s leak is enemy propaganda meant to sow distrust on Coruscant, Ulgo orders his flagship, The Loyal Alderaan, to begin bombardment after forces on the planet attempt to repair one of the disabled anti-air guns.  From there the rest of his fleet joins, painting the skies of Coruscant red with artillery fire for the next week.

Day 3 of the Sacking - Ulgo receives intelligence that it will take a week before the Republic Fleet will be able to meet him at Coruscant and that the splinter he sent to destroy agricultural worlds has already left several in flames.  He continues the bombardment, already having destroyed any remaining defenses and knowing there is no chance of retaliation. During the chaos he deploys loyal forces onto Coruscant to not only finish transferring the Empire’s treasury into his ship but also to pillage all of the defenseless corporate HQs and the wealth of those he deems disloyal on the planet. His forces take everything that was not nailed down.

Day 8 of the Sacking - With Republic forces nearing, Ulgo is finally satisfied with the destruction he’s caused and finishes his bombardment of Coruscant by destroying the old Republic Senate building by converging all fire on it. It would later become a great memorial in the center of Coruscant for what transpired amidst the Sacking. By the time his fleet withdraws, it is estimated a tenth of Coruscant’s population lost their lives and a third suffered at least some form of permanent injury. The ensuing famines, fires, collapses, etc would only add to the death toll.

Day 10 of the Sacking
-  Ulgo’s fleet enters orbit of Kuat which immediately surrenders all ships undergoing repair or construction in its dockyards in the hopes of escaping Ulgo’s wrath. It does not work and while it is not as gruesome as what happened at Coruscant, all shipyards at Kuat are destroyed to prevent them from falling into Republic hands.

End of the Sacking
- As Ulgo and his fleet withdraws from the Core, he begins a scorched-earth campaign on a path to the Mid-Rim. The Republic Fleet, meanwhile, is forced to station itself around Coruscant in the hopes of providing relief to the ravaged world.  With his enemies occupied, any world that Ulgo comes across is burned, anyone who does not bend to his will is executed, and anything of value is stolen.  Yularen, still licking his wounds at Bastion, is so horrified by this betrayal that he declares Ulgo a galactic criminal and pushes the Imperial Council to do the same. The fact that Ulgo possesses the second biggest fleet in the galaxy, however, leaves the council quagmire in deliberations. Any hope of true imperial unity dies as the weakness of the council causes many to conclude that they must fend for themselves.

After the Sacking
- Stavar Ulgo declares himself Grand Moff, establishes the Domain of Anaxes, and openly stands in defiance of the New Republic after they finish securing the rest of the Core. Attempts to strike at Anaxes are repulsed and both sides are forced into a ceasefire, driven by the realization that resources are spread too thin for another protracted war.  A year later, Jedi Master Luke resigns from his post in the New Republic.
