This section will cover any major updates to the character's story as the campaign unfolds.
- Please provide a brief (at least one short paragraph) backstory for your character.
Family Formation: Raylan Patruun's parent's could not come from two different backgrounds. His father was a from a cosmopolitan off-world Mirialan clan, who had made their living doing cargo runs during the last days of the Republic. His mother was from a conservative, deeply religious family adhering to an agrarian lifestyle. Raylan's father, Tetran, grew up during the days of the Empire, but slowly the humanocentrist empire pushed non-humans away from major jobs. Many Mirialans moved to the Outer Rim, searching for opportunities, others went to their homeworld.
Tetran settled in the small community of Odesse, where he met the woman who would become Raylan's mother. Pherranna. Tetran and Pherranna's marriage was a surprise, yet the happiness their bond brought to the small farming community was welcome.
Odesse escaped the full weight of the Imperial regime due to its remote location, and Tetran and Pherrana maintained a deep faith in the Force. Odesse itself became the site of a cultural resistance, maintaining faith in the Force in a galaxy that hated it.
The battle of Endor fortunately occurred before Imperial anti-Force policies cracked down on the planet Mirial. With Palpatine's regime capitulated, Tetran and Pherrana celebrated the birth of their first son, Raylan. 3 years later, they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Phelanda.
Recruitment into the Jedi Order: The Patruun family didn't have much, but their quiet rural existence would have been enough, had they not felt the call of the Force to greater things. It was the influence of Jadla Kuni, who openly embraced a Jedi/Mirialan existence, that lead to many families offering their services to the burgeoning Jedi Order.
At the age of 7, Raylan and his entire family finished moving into their Dantooine home, a small farm outside of Khoonda. Raylan and Phelanda were taught in the Jedi schools, and quickly inducted into classes when they both demonstrated aptitude in the Force.
Life as a Jedi: Raylan has always been excited to become a Jedi, and embraced his studies. Raylan has shown aptitude in the traditional path of a Jedi Knight, while his sister is dedicated to the path of a healer. - Why does your character want to be a jedi? Raylan wants to be a Jedi as an act of service. He firmly believes in the history of the Jedi Order, understands it about as well as anyone in the galaxy can after the Empire, and knows that the Jedi Order growing will only make the galaxy a better place. For him, it is a family endeavour, by extension, the Jedi are his family.
- Are
there aspects of your character’s background (people, events, places)
that were more formative to your character’s current personal
development? Raylan was raised in the Jedi Order from a formative age. He has lived near Khoonda and walks to school every day, heading home for lunch and then back to class. His parents are very on top of his education, being well educcated themselves. His parents take care to make sure the kids are well read and up to speed on galactic events. Though there is an element of being sheltered, as their kids are studying to be Jedi, they have made a conscious effort to make their kids be aware of the good, and the bad of the galaxy.
- Describe the kinds of personal relationships you might have had in your past? The Patruun family, Tetran (dad), Pherrana (mom) and Phelanda (sister) are a close knit, traditional Mirialan/Jedi family. His mother and father are close, and Raylan has a close relationship with them. This leads him to do many things out of sense of duty, and not think about it very much. Phelanda is close to him, but she is a younger sister, so he has the typical "She is somewhat annoying" relationship as the older brother. He is happy to see her join the Service Corps, and is also happy he didn't have to go that route, as he wants adventure. He has a few close friends (I think of him as being kind of the kid in class who gets along with everyone, no specific, "best friend" is coming to mind.) His competitive nature comes out in self criticism, which leaves himi focusing on himself a lot.
- What is most Jedi-like about your character? What is least Jedi-like about your character? The most Jedi-like aspect of Raylan is his faith in the idea of "the Jedi", whenever he acts, he is always trying to emulate the ideals of what he has been taught the Jedi should represent. The least Jedi-like aspect of Raylan is his borderline obsession with outshining his peers. He has developed this as a way to judge if he is a "good Jedi" or not, after all, if he can be the best among his peers, he can be certain he follows the will of the Force.
- Does your character have a strong idea of the Force? Do they experience it in a certain way or is it a mystery to them? The Force has been a constant companion to Raylan, since he was a child he has felt it's touch on his life. It is like the air he breathes, he has relied on it and unconsciously used it his entire life. In times when the Jedi exercises require him to reduce reliance on the Force, he has struggled.
- Some
characters have dark (or great) secrets that they keep locked away from
even their dearest friends. Does your character harbor a great regret
or a secret aspiration that is central to their character? No.
- What elements of your character are you most excited to explore, whether narrative or mechanical?
I think having a character whose entire life has been intertwined with the Jedi Order from it's inception will be very fun to play. This has an interesting balance of finding his identity, while already having a strong identity to the community. How this means he will appear to other Jedi, especially one's who are newcomers, or "outsiders", plays an interesting role in shaping him. Mechanically I am hoping to go for a Makashi Duelist, and that is just a fun thing for me, to create a bit of a swashbuckling hero.
- Does your character have a long-term plan, mechanically?
- The
Dark Side tempts each Jedi differently. How does it prey upon your
character's emotional weakness and what makes them susceptible to it? You have to be the best Raylan, your family is so proud of how you have achieved so much! Being picked as a Padawan, it's such an increase in responsibility. Your parents have taught you everything you know about the Force, you have the tattoos to show the choices and lessons the Jedi have taught you, you cannot fail, for you are part of the Jedi Order, the greatest organization in the galaxy." I think that he is susceptible when he or other Jedi fail to live up to what he thinks the ideal is. This means he is hard on himself, and others to excel and be better. If he is not confident, he will fake it, because Jedi have to be flexible and be willing to try new things. I think he will have difficulty empathizing with those outside of the Jedi Order, whose goals differ so much from his own.
- Would you rather start your character as an Initiate or as a Padawan? I would like to do the Padawan start, based on backstory.
