This section will cover any major updates to the character's story as the campaign unfolds.
- Please provide a brief (at least one short paragraph) backstory for your character.
Zorva is a young Hutt, relatively speaking, at only 80 years old—a mere adolescent by Hutt standards. He hails from a minor Kajidic that is itself a client of a larger clan. Consequently, his family was too small and too cautious to carve out a significant place in the galactic underworld. Zorva grew up watching his progenitor squander decades plotting meaningless schemes, hoarding credits, and currying favor with more powerful Hutts to no avail. His family’s obsession with power felt stagnant and pointless to him. Zorva realized early on that he lacked the stomach for treachery, manipulation, and deceit—the key tools of Hutt culture. Though he tried to live up to his family’s expectations, he became disillusioned with their narrow definition of success. Seeking a life of meaning, Zorva rejected his Kajidic’s ambitions and set out to find his own purpose. In his journey, he discovered the Force within himself—a rare gift among Hutts. - Why does your character want to be a jedi? Growing up in a culture obsessed with fleeting power and greed, and seeing its futility, he rejected the transactional scheming of his Kajidic and sought a path rooted in enduring justice. The idea of joining the Jedi Order, an institution focused on bettering the galaxy, captivated him. For Zorva, the Jedi represent hope, purpose, and a the opportunity to shepherd the various races to a greater purpose—something he craved after feeling disillusioned by his family’s endless pursuit of status and wealth. Finally, he sees the Jedi not only as a means to contribute to the galaxy but also as a way to cleanse his species' reputation by proving that a Hutt can be more than a crime lord or tyrant.
- Are
there aspects of your character’s background (people, events, places)
that were more formative to your character’s current personal
development? The most formative aspect of Zorva's background is his time watching his Kajidic stagnate and fail to achieve greatness despite decades of plotting and scheming. He was particularly shaped by his progenitor, Isska, a once-ambitious Hutt who grew increasingly bitter and paranoid over years of unfulfilled plans. Seeing Isska waste centuries chasing an unachievable legacy drove Zorva to reflect on his own life and reject the path of greed and manipulation. Drawing on his family’s skills in subterfuge and his innate cunning, Zorva found that he was especially adept at uncovering corruption. His Hutt heritage not only gave him insights into navigating the black markets of many worlds and uncovering the motives of various criminals, but also gave him an edge in infiltrating and understanding such groups.
- Describe the kinds of personal relationships you might have had in your past? Zorva’s relationships have been complicated. Among his Kajidic, most bonds were transactional or superficial, shaped by Hutt culture’s focus on power and self-interest. Zorva’s refusal to embrace deceit and treachery made him an outsider, leaving him with few true allies among his own people. Enemies from his past could potentially include rivals within his Kajidic who saw him as a weak link, as well as criminals who now resent his efforts to dismantle their operations.
Outside of his history with the Hutt spheres of power, Zorva's longevity allows him to see the grand scope of galactic history in a way most beings cannot. He often reflects on how the actions of Humans, Twi'leks, Rodians, Duros, and the many multitude of other shorter-lived species seem repetitive, with generations repeating the mistakes of the past. He has seen first hand how the two most recent generations of younger races nearly tore the galaxy asunder in the Galactic Civil War and the Clone Wars before that, with neither generation heeding the necessary lessons from their respective predecessors. However, he admires their passion and willingness to fight for what they believe in, even knowing they may not see the results in their lifetimes. This observation gives him a deep well of patience, but also a tinge of sadness, knowing that many of his allies and friends will age and die while he remains. - What is most Jedi-like about your character? What is least Jedi-like about your character? Zorva embodies patience, a commitment to justice, and a desire to build a lasting galactic community. He is a careful thinker who values peace and strives to solve conflicts through diplomacy and subterfuge before resorting to violence. His focus on protecting the weak and dismantling corruption aligns closely with the Jedi ideals of compassion and service.
Zorva’s cunning and willingness to manipulate others can sometimes blur the line between light and dark. His longevity means that he can sometimes lose sight of the short term impacts of some choices. His Hutt upbringing also makes him prone to condescension and arrogance, which can alienate others and cause friction in his relationships. Finally, given the penchant for the younger races to act impetuously, Zorva often wonders if a sterner hand is needed to guide the galaxy. For their own good, of course. - Does your character have a strong idea of the Force? Do they experience it in a certain way or is it a mystery to them? To Zorva, the Force is both a gift and a mystery. He sees it as a tool for achieving balance and justice, but his pragmatic mindset sometimes clashes with its more spiritual aspects. He currently lacks little in the way of formal training, but has already manifested several seemingly innate abilities to not only sense the minds of the sentients around him but to also shape and mold their emotions and in some cases even the very way they perceive their surroudings.
- Some
characters have dark (or great) secrets that they keep locked away from
even their dearest friends. Does your character harbor a great regret
or a secret aspiration that is central to their character? Zorva’s greatest regret is that he couldn’t save his progenitor, Isska, from their obsessive pursuit of power. Despite rejecting the Kajidic’s ways, he still wishes he could have inspired Isska to seek a better path. This failure drives his determination to prove that a Hutt can live a life of purpose and honor. Secretly, Zorva aspires to bring about meaningful change in the Hutt culture, though he knows this is an impossible goal. While he focuses on galactic justice, a small part of him hopes that his actions will inspire future generations of Hutts to reject the cycles of greed and treachery that define their society.
- What elements of your character are you most excited to explore, whether narrative or mechanical?
From a narrative angle, the Jedi and the Hutts are the antithesis of each other. Zorva’s struggle to balance his Hutt heritage with his Jedi ideals offers opportunities for character development and struggles along the way. Exploring how he navigates prejudice (both against other and experiencing it first hand), earns the trust of his peers, and reconciles his cunning nature with the Jedi Code would be a compelling interpersonal struggle. I’m also interested to see how his unique perspective influences missions involving criminal networks or political intrigue.
From the mechanical perspective, I’m looking to try something different from last time, and look forward to developing Zorva’s abilities in areas like investigation, deception, and subterfuge. Zorva's force powers were also selected to both reinforce his strengths but make up for his physical attributes (or lack thereof). - Does your character have a long-term plan, mechanically? For the short term, the mechanical plan is to develop his initial specialization and Force Powers of Sense, Misdirect, and Influence. Mid term (perhaps around achieving Force Rating 2) he may pick up the Enhance power and possibly branch out to other trees such as Sage or either Niman Disciple to represent Zorva becoming more proficient and leadership and diplomacy. Meanwhile and future Dedication talents will likely go into either Intelligence or Presence depending on where the character's arc is leaning at the time. Long term, I haven't thought ahead to any sort of long term goal, as the nature of emergent story telling tends to take characters in new unexpected directions and consequently make such initial roadmaps obsolete well before they are realized.
- The
Dark Side tempts each Jedi differently. How does it prey upon your
character's emotional weakness and what makes them susceptible to it? The Dark Side tempts Zorva through his arrogance and his belief that he knows what is best for others, even if they don't realize it themselves. This can lead to a feeling of condescension toward shorter-lived species and his willingness to manipulate others for the greater good can push him toward rationalizing morally dubious actions. Additionally, his desire to prove that Hutts can be noble makes him vulnerable to pride, which the Dark Side could exploit to turn his quest for justice into a quest for personal glory.
- Would you rather start your character as an Initiate or as a Padawan? Given Zorva's history and upbringing, it would be more appropriate for him to arrive at the Jedi Order as a new initiate.
