This section will cover any major updates to the character's story as the campaign unfolds.
Please provide a brief (at least one short paragraph) backstory for your character.
Born to the name Olrick Ra Chume Dan Valyr, Olrick was raised within the Hapes Consortium to the ever-evolving changes that came with Hapen politics. Having been born with a twin sister, Astra, Olrick grew and worked tirelessly with Astra to help improve the livelihood of the Hapen people. Before the two grew their skills to eventually assist beyond their homeworld, with the two serving as ambassadors and envoys for Hapes. Despite the usual upbringing of traditional Hapens, Olrick would grow to be someone many of his people would look to with much curiosity as an enigma to how he conducted himself. As well as how he was in turn received by Hapen commoners and nobles alike. These skills proved fruitful in Olrick’s time as a diplomat for Hapes to systems such as Naboo, to whom he’d feel a close relation and connection to. After the tragic loss of his sister and growing insight into his own abilities that stemmed from a connection to The Force, Olrick stepped down from his position as envoy to his people under what were largely mysterious circumstances. From here, Olrick has journeyed away from the Core Worlds and Mid Rim to the planet of Dantooine, feeling a draw and hearing a curious rumor to a growing order of Jedi grandmastered by none other than Luke Skywalker himself. Olrick having traveled to Dantooin to better understand his own abilities and grow upon them as well as his connection to The Force. For it is in understanding this and strengthening such that his goals to better himself as a negotiator for his people as well as the galaxy itself, where others may struggle, will flourish.
Why does your character want to be a Jedi?
Although he wasn’t able to learn many details about the Jedi, Olrick's view of the Jedi is as follows. While many Jedi can be flawed, there’s great good that can come from their experience, abilities, and generosity. Olrick, compared to many of his people, holds Jedi in a better light, given his listening and readings of others recounting stories from The Clone Wars as well as stories traveling of Luke Skywalker. Having heard of individuals such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, who utilized skills in negotiations paired with a shrewd mind to handle conflict, Olrick has a hope to aspire to this methodology and skill with people. He doing this in the hope he may better help and serve his own people in a better light to their growth and the galaxy itself.
Are there aspects of your character’s background (people, events, places) that were more formative to your character’s current personal development? Alt version: What was the most formative event/person/place from your backstory that you would like GMs to know or focus on?
Olrick was born to the upper class of Hapes and served as one of the planet's ambassadors and envoys with various other systems. Despite his upbringing in Hapen society, Olrick proves to be rather different and unique in how he treats others. This was in many ways furthered by his time away from his homeworld. As a result of this, Olrick has a hope to help his own people improve as a society for all involved as well as the people of the galaxy itself. Furthermore, Olrick experienced the loss of his sister, with the event playing a transformative role in his mental state and pushing him to his goals all the more. There may be more to this, though these are the points that come to mind most at the time of typing this.
Describe the kinds of personal relationships you might have had in your past? Be as general or as specific as you’d like. What do the kinds of friends and enemies you have made say about your character?
Of the relationships experienced by this character, one is with his twin sister Astra, who has unfortunately died. That being said, she, like Olrick, was Force Sensitive, and the two shared a strong connection, given this and their relation to one another. Despite the two not knowing of their Force Sensitivity while Astra was alive. It's because of her death that Olrick largely blames himself and pushes himself to an obsessive degree to be better and help other people. So that his tragedy may not be lived by any others. Other connections include his family on Hapes and the Hapen people. Given his time on Naboo, Olrick does feel a kinship of sorts to the Nabooian people yet can struggle with a distaste for Imperial remnants, such as the Board of Moffs. Lastly, the individuals that had brought about the death of his twin sister Astra, though mostly unknown by Olrick as of currently, are easily enemies he’d seek to bring justice to.
What is most Jedi-like about your character? What is least Jedi-like about your character?
What is most Jedi-like about Olrick is his desire to help and show his compassion to others. He doing so through the skills he learned and grew upon naturally, such as his ability to negotiate disputes. What's least Jedi-like about Olrick is his struggle to let go of the past. This largely pushes him to be better, yes, but has him struggling to overcome guilt and a desire and need to save everyone. This has led Olrick to struggle with attachments, and when those attachments are threatened, he can often react as a result.
Does your character have a strong idea of the Force? Do they experience it in a certain way or is it a mystery to them?
Currently, I'm still trying to get a feel for the character and how he interprets The Force. Once I have a good idea, I don't mind updating this and/or informing the moderators. That being said, what I do know for Olrick is he has a building idea of The Force, though nothing too terribly concrete. He's experienced The Force and its will working through him. Experienced it through visions and feelings, perhaps a low whisper of comforting advice. He’s even experienced a touch of the Dark Side, perhaps with his sister's death. This is in many ways why he's sought The Jedi Order out to understand The Force and his connection to it.
Some characters have dark (or great) secrets that they keep locked away from even their dearest friends. Does your character harbor a great regret or a secret aspiration that is central to their character? This answer will be kept as private as possible. (No is a valid response)
Yes. Olrick, as mentioned, largely blames himself for his twin sister's death. Though he would hope to find those responsible for her death and bring them to justice, the form of justice he has in mind is one he would take in his own hands as judge, jury, and executioner. An aspect the Dark Side may play off of. Despite this, he hopes to grow better as a negotiator, as well as strengthening his knowledge and connection to The Force. Lastly, it’s not so much a dark secret but a well-guarded goal Olrick does have. That being to help see his people grow better morally and with less infighting. In his mind this will help to strengthen his people and their place in the galaxy. A struggle to do, yes, but a goal all the same.
What elements of your character are you most excited to explore, whether narrative or mechanical? What aspect of your character do you think will be most challenging to play? We also encourage you to think about how your character does/will interact with the Force and how you may also want that to change mechanically/narratively as your character grows.
With Olrick, I'm building to a heavy focus on willpower and discipline, as I've always been intrigued by the idea of The Force and leaning into one's Force capabilities as a focus. This thus in part represented by how I’ve built him. I'm, however, also focusing on his presence and ability to negotiate—two other strong qualities of his I'm eager to explore as he grows as a character. It's my hope that as I play him more, I gain a better idea and understanding of his unique connection to The Force and his goals. My hope would be to see the two intermingle, especially as he grows stronger in both The Force and as a character. While hopefully seeing him overcome many of his struggles, flaws, and guilt as he grows to be better. That is my biggest challenge with him. I'm still trying to figure him out as a character, as I've not yet played him and gotten a feel for him. I'm hoping he's not just known for that one gimmick or that one thing he did and could be made and played into something more in a manner with ties to the story along with other characters and NPCs. While growing more as a character and what he has to offer from a story perspective. Lastly, I should add that, given my character is a Hapen, he does possess a physical allure. This being the case, if a storyteller wishes to utilize this in games for fun, whether it be beneficial or detrimental at times, I’m more than willing to do such and see where things lead.
Does your character have a long-term plan, mechanically? If so, what is it? No is an acceptable answer - we're just interested in the sorts of niches people want to fill and builds people are interested in. We also encourage you to think about how your character does/will interact with the Force and how you may also want that to change mechanically/narratively as your character grows.
My idea is to have him grow to be much like Obi-Wan Kenobi in his skills with negotiation and such, as well as with a saber, if indeed able. I do hope to enjoy the wonders of Force Mysteries as well as possibly delving into ideas such as prophecy and foresight if given the chance, both mechanically and narratively. I'm thinking of taking the Knight or General specialization at some point to reflect Olrick's growing capabilities as I also gain an idea of his character the more I play him. When it comes to the Force, I've always been fascinated by the idea of someone growing into a vessel and conduit of The Force's will made manifest in a manner and sense. For Olrick, his growing Force capabilities and FR will be an important aspect of his character. Due to this, I would hope to lean into the possible growth of him becoming a vessel and embodiment, of sorts, of The Force's Will alongside others interested in doing so.
The Dark Side tempts each Jedi differently. How does it prey upon your character's emotional weakness and what makes them susceptible to it?
Ever since he was young, Olrick has had a great hope to help people, whether his own or those in the galaxy. After his sister's death, however, this goal was only pushed to an obsessive degree and need. Olrick, as a result of this, struggles with attachments and the desire to protect those he holds dearly, unlike how he was able to protect his sister. If the Dark Side were to offer him the ability to protect others he cares for, especially in reference to his sister's death and helping to prevent a similar situation, he would most certainly be tempted. It's, after all, in these attachments and his obsessive hope and need to help others that he may not always think rationally. Where he has a desire to give his sister's death meaning.
Would you rather start your character as an Initiate or as a Padawan? While most characters will have 2-5 sessions to become familiar with the Order before becoming a Padawan, there is the option to start as one immediately. This is typically reserved for characters who were born or raised within the Order and their backstory should reflect as such. More details on being a Padawan can be found here.
For Olrick, let's have him start as an Initiate, please.
