Gafnon's Institute of Academics

Filed by Professor Aelira Quen, Concord Faculty Liaison

Gafnon’s Institute of Academics occupies a weathered stretch of Coralstone Bluff in Yenai’s Dolwen Archipelago, where the sea meets the cliffs in long, foaming arcs. Established before the modern Veilwatch Concord charter, the Institute remains formally independent, yet its cooperation with Concord research programs is long-standing and essential. Many of our field protocols were refined here. Much of our junior staff still comes through these halls.

The curriculum offers deep specialization across arcane, natural, and philosophical disciplines. Dual certification is encouraged. I continue to cite the pairing of a Scholar’s Degree in Wildspace Science with a Certificate of Lesser Magicks as a model of practical versatility.

Students are expected to complete independent immersions. Fieldwork sites range from sub-aquatic vaults on Yenai to Concord-sponsored expeditions across the system. We encourage a balance of theory and direct observation, though a few upper deans still claim too much field time “softens the scholarly mind.”

The campus is built into the stone and salt. Paths follow the bluff’s natural slope. Shimmercrystal lanterns keep the grounds safely lit at night, and their output is adjusted during astronomical events. Avian familiars are common along the upper terraces. So are sea-weathered constructs assigned to light maintenance, though their access to interior archives remains restricted after the Catalogue Shuffling Incident of 971.

Though not governed by Concord protocol, the Institute remains a vital contributor to our research ecosystem. I serve as the primary liaison on-site, overseeing mentorship placements and aligning faculty collaboration with containment and study standards. Progress is steady, though coordination remains uneven across departments.

The mold recurrence in the lower stacks has not been fully resolved. I am told a remediation plan exists. I have not yet seen it.
