The Subs

Description - Under Blackrock, the Sub stretch throughout tunnels, caverns and sunken halls in a labyrinth of industry and invention. Dwarves, gnomes, kobolds and tieflings gather here in the depths, build machines, extract resources and form the foundations of the city.

The Subs form the backbone of Blackrock, in more than one sense. The residents here form the city's infrastructure, forge its weapons, supply its industry and maintain the large machines, that power the city. Steam, metal and stone dominate the Subs, and conflicts here burn as hot as its forges.

About the Subs

  • Main Inhabitants - Drow, Deep Gnomes, Duergar, Hill Dwarves, Mountain Dwarves, Thri-Kreen, Kobolds, Dragonborn, Earth-Genasi
  • Reputation - Residents of the Subs are often seen as cold and unsentimental. Goblintown considers them somewhat stuck-up, while the Dreamlands value their attention to detail and precision. They work closely with The Bubble to manage the city's water, and don't like dealing with the Necropolis where their tunnels intersect with the catacombs and undead threaten the Subs.
  • Economy - Mushroom farms, tunnelling, machinery, infrastructure, construction, power
  • Geography - The Subs reach out under all districts, but are mostly accessed by the City Center, where large elevators take people down from Grand Central. Other districts have their own access points, but official and unofficial.

Hammerton

Molten metal glows in deep crucibles, as hammers ring out against anvils and massive machines mass-produce weapons, armour and arcane instruments. The best smiths, mechanics and artisans of Blackrock work here and produce wonders both functional and destructive.

Hammerton is located in the north-west of the district, where it can be accessed through private elevators from the City Center's Downtown, and where gods for export can be brought to The Bubble's Deepwater Docks. It also enables the district to use water pumped down from the Muir River, for cooling.

Most of it lies within a large cavern that has been greatly expanded, to make room for new forges and workshops.

Faiths and Organisations

Locations

  • The MSG Guild Hall - located near the core of the sub-district and overlooking its large cavern, a large tower with walkways circling up around it and branching out to different parts
  • Kraglorn Access Tunnel - a large tunnel heading out of the city, towards the Kraglorn mountains. Used for trade. Railway under construction.

The Veins

Tunnels bore through ancient rock, to reach veins of precious metals and minerals. In the process also breaching long lost relics and secrets, buried deep underground. The Veins are a combination of mines, of which some remain active and provide Hammerton with much of its ore, while others have been deemed barren and have been repurposed to grow mushrooms, while yet others have been abandoned, with no one daring to speak of the reasons.

The Veins mostly extend into the ore-rich regions in the north-east of the district, and deep under the Necropolis and the Hillside, towards the Kraglorn mountains in the far north.

Faiths and Organisations

  • The Miners' Guild - A guild of mine workers and other maintenance staff, responsible for safe operation of the mines

Locations

Steamtown

A newly formed sub-district of engineers and tinkerers, outside of the control of the The Metalworker's & Steamfitter's Guild. It is located to the east, and mostly extends under Goblintown. The engineers here work in more risky ways, often overlooking safety protocols and constructing new contraptions, without limitations.

Deep Market

The Deep Market - also simply known as "The Deep" - is a market square hidden within the Subs and often serves as a black market for the city. It is located in the southwest of the district, near The Bubble, and sells many illicit goods smuggled past the inspections at its Deepwater Docks.

In addition to this, anything from illegal weapons and armour, machines, blueprints to machines and rare materials can be purchased here, under the table. If it can be built, stolen or modified, you can probably find it here, for the right price.

Next to the market itself, several peoples have settled in nearby caverns and tunnels and seek to control the illicit trade of goods.

Faiths and Organisations

  • The Smugglers - what can't be smuggled past the City Watch through other channels will often be brought here, to recoup costs
  • The Iron Pact - a fanatical group of smiths and engineers who abhor the The Metalworker's & Steamfitter's Guild's control over these trades, and wish to provide new avenues for production and sale
  • The Drow Court - a drow settlement and its rulers, who have settle here and now seek to exert control, over the market

Locations

  • The Market Square - the main square of the Deep Market
  • Dren Izzen - a drow settlement built in a cave near the market square, with only one known access tunnel
