Dreamlands

Desciption - The Dreamlands are a labyrinth of towering libraries, candlelit salons of fortune, ivy-clad academies, and floating islands where scholars whisper secrets and the stars guide the lost. In hidden sanctuaries, dream-walkers are cradled while scribes etch prophecies into living volumes with ink that seems to shift between meanings. Gentle chimes echo through magically lit streets, and misty courtyards offer pockets of stillness where contemplation reigns. The realm is defined by rumours, illusions, and shifting realities, where past, present, and possibility overlap. Streets subtly bend when unobserved, and every corner seems to conceal a secret waiting to be interpreted.

At the heart of the district rises the great vortex, a towering pillar of astral energy descending from the upper skies through the Dreamlands to Arken’s Tower below. Its shifting, luminous currents paint the night in brilliant colors and serve as a navigational anchor for travelers and seers alike. Fortune tellers study its astral winds, believing they carry fragments of knowledge that transcend time and space, while smaller strands of this energy drift outward, weaving through the floating islands before dispersing into the open sky.

Most of the Dreamlands exist disconnected from the rest of the city, freely floating high in the skies above, untethered to the world below. Supplies arrive either through regular deliveries or, for the larger islands, through hidden portals linking specific subdistricts to individual floating landmasses. The existence of many of these gateways is kept secret by those who maintain them on both sides, as their discovery would make them vulnerable to sabotage and destabilize the delicate enchantments that keep some islands aloft. Because of this isolation, most inhabitants rely on flight for travel, whether through innate magical ability, trained beasts such as giant eagles, or constructed means like airships, balloons, and other arcane-engineered craft.

Only two islands are permanently anchored to the ground: the Dusk Market’s main square, connected via a cable car descending into the City Center, and the Endless Archives, home to the city’s primary university (commonly referred to as the Arcanum of Liminal Studies), which is linked through a permanent teleportation circle maintained by the academy’s mages. Rumors persist of additional hidden circles used for less lawful purposes, though the city watch has never confirmed them.
