Boron is a hard, brittle metalloid with a very high melting point. Its primary applications are in borosilicate glass (which resists thermal shock, making it the standard material for laboratory glassware and cookware), in boron-containing ceramics, as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactor control rods, and in certain high-strength aluminium and magnesium alloys for aerospace use. Boron is produced by magnesiothermic reduction of boron trioxide, itself derived from borax or boric acid.
