Mineral ore refers to a naturally occurring concentration of minerals, metals, or other valuable substances that can be extracted using complex refinement processes. Ores are typically found in rocks and are formed through geological processes over long periods of time. These processes involve the accumulation and concentration of specific minerals or elements to levels that make their extraction and processing worthwhile. Some of the most economically important ores are hematite, magnetite, siderite (iron ore), chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite (copper ore), electrum (gold-silver ore), bauxite (aluminium ore), uraninite (uranium ore), etc.

Processing mineral ore often requires a smeltery, which may be any of these two:

  • Basic Smeltery refers to a simple facility capable of various types of metallurgy using fossil fuels (either Coal or Coke) alone. These facilities are often easier to build and find.
  • Advanced Smeltery refers to a complex, much larger facility with electrical power capable of advanced forms of ore refining such as hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, as well as equipped with an electric arc furnace.

Any ore that can be processed in a Basic Smeltery can also be processed in an Advanced Smeltery, omitting the cost in fossil fuels, with the exception of Pig Iron and all of its ferrous derivatives, which always require carbon fuel.

All types of steel are considered derivatives or down-the-line products of Pig Iron.
