The Iron Vow
“Steel holds. Oaths bind.”
📜 Overview:
The Iron Vow is a distinguished oath-sworn corps within Ashkarin’s military—part honor guard, part judicial force, and part militant escort. Drawn from veterans of the Iron Watch and Ashkarin Regulars, these soldiers swear personal, binding oaths to the city itself, not to its commanders or noble houses. They answer only to the Captain of Ashkarin and, ultimately, to Overlord Amir Vexley.
Though small in number—fewer than 60 soldiers at any given time—they are feared, respected, and deployed surgically to places where loyalty, discipline, and resolve are paramount.
🧱 Structure:
-
The Iron Vow is divided into Five Bands, each comprising 10–12 soldiers and led by a Captain-ranked officer.
-
Each Band is assigned missions independent from the main army: securing dangerous prisoners, escorting relics or nobles, suppressing internal threats, or delivering wartime judgments.
-
Band numbers are not hierarchical—the Third Band is not junior to the First. Each Band is autonomous and carries a unique identity and specialization.
🧭 The Third Band – Captain Tressa's Command:
Led by Captain Tressa of the Third Band, this unit is known for:
-
Long-distance escort missions
-
Prisoner handling and high-risk transport
-
Neutral enforcement in political disputes (often sent when regular Watch forces are compromised)
-
Often referred to by commoners as "The Gray Road", a nickname stemming from their unrelenting patrols through Ashkarin’s hinterlands.
🗡️ Culture and Oaths:
Members of the Iron Vow are bound by ritual to uphold:
-
Loyalty to the City Above All
-
No Blood Without Judgment
-
Oath Before Command
-
Truth Before Fear
Breaking an Iron Vow results in oath-scarring: the offender's armor is struck by the Captain's hammer, and the offending sigil is removed with fire. The soldier is then exiled or executed, depending on the breach.
Each Band has its own sigil, etched onto armor and blades. The Third Band’s is a cracked sun rising over a narrow pass, symbolizing judgment through hardship.
⚙️ Equipment & Appearance:
-
Gray-steel chainmail, oiled and rune-etched with their personal oath
-
Tower shields marked with their Band sigil
-
Steel sun amulets, enchanted to grow warm when an oath is broken nearby
-
Captains often carry a Vow Ledger—a bound book of current assignments, oaths, and field judgements
⚖️ Political Role:
The Iron Vow serves both Overlord Vexley’s paranoia and his ambitions. Because their loyalty is to Ashkarin as an ideal, not to individual houses, nobles both fear and manipulate them. The merchant class resents their unbribable nature, and the criminal underworld treats their presence like a curse.
Still, even the corrupt respect the Iron Vow’s reputation: when they arrive, decisions are final.
🎲 Adventure Hooks:
-
A member of the Iron Vow has disappeared in the Seeping Waste—did they desert, die, or find something they shouldn't?
-
The Third Band is escorting a prisoner tied to a long-buried noble scandal, and a local house wants them silenced.
-
A junior soldier of the Fifth Band has confessed a broken oath—but it may have been under magical duress.
-
Someone is forging Iron Vow insignia to smuggle relics out of the Tower Arcana.
