⛪ Helmwatch Hall
A hall where wounds are healed, vows are kept, and the flame never blinks.
Location: Eastern wing of Ember Bastion, entered through a soot-stained arch carved with vow-bound saints and the sigils of St. Ras the Radiant.
Function: Helmwatch Hall serves as both infirmary and sacred retreat—a place where the injured find care, the faithful find focus, and all who pass beneath its arch are measured by the quiet fire. The wounded lie beneath lanterns that never dim. The burdened speak their purpose to stone and flame. Here, within fire-warmed walls, healing is not offered lightly—it is earned through resolve.
🛕 The Shrine of the Last Vow
At the center of the Main Hall, raised upon a basalt dais, rests the Helm of the Last Vow—a relic of St. Ras himself. The steel helm, unadorned and eternal, bears only a single divine mark: a perfect circlet of radiant light etched into the brow, said to have been burned there by the saint’s own ascension.
Pilgrims come here to kneel before the relic and speak their sacred intent. Whether declaring vengeance for a fallen brother, swearing to protect the weak, or pledging to bring truth to forgotten places, their words are offered in stillness.
It is said that no lie may pass beneath the helm’s gaze. That the blade records the weight of every vow in unseen flame. And that those who betray what they swore here find no rest in firelight again—only silence and cold stone.
🏛️ Layout & Sacred Spaces
| Location | Description |
|---|
| Main Hall | The central vigil chamber. Long communal tables line the vaulted hall, where pilgrims eat in quiet companionship beneath arched windows. The Shrine of the Last Vow stands at its head—flame-basin before it, helm above, blade below. |
| Northern Alcove | Shrine of Reflection. Low-burning candles and a sacred font invite solitude. Vowbearers often retreat here before entering the Main Hall. |
| Southwest Wing | Healing ward and dormitory. Simple cots line the walls; salves, incense, and boiled roots are kept by Sister Irielle, whose hands carry the memory of flame. |
| Central Courtyard | Open-air cloister with three ancient trees and a weathered fountain. The saints carved at its base have no names, only walking feet. The water is always warm. |
| Southern Room | Pilgrim registry and the Book of the Fallen—a soot-black ledger recording the names of those who took their final vows and never returned. |
| Aerinel Dholinar’s Cottage | At the far edge lies the vine-choked hut of the Oracle of the Mekari, who whispers into dream. Within is Savaeleth, a space of vision and unspoken truth, opened only to the worthy or the broken. |
🔥 The Vigil of the Oath
"To pass this gate without purpose is to invite chaos into a sacred place."
All who enter Ember Bastion are offered the Vigil of the Oath, a ritual rite of intent, overseen by a Keeper of the Vow. In a chamber near the shrine, the supplicant kneels before coals, candle behind, and flame before. When asked what burden they carry, their answer is not just heard—it is recorded by presence and fire alike.
Upon completion, their vow is inscribed onto a strip of vellum, sealed in wax and ash: an Oathbrand they must carry with them. Some stitch it into their cloak. Others wear it over their heart. And those who fail their vow… are marked by silence.
The helm does not glow. It does not burn.
But it remembers.
