Chthonia Trimorphia

🌕 Chthonia Trimorphia

Lesser Goddess of Secret Knowledge, the Underworld, and the Moon
The Threefold Veil, Whisper of the Dark, Keeper of the Last Tone
Alignment: Neutral (worshippers vary Lawful to Chaotic by path)

📜 Lore & Origin

Chthonia Trimorphia is the Goddess of Secrets, the Moon’s Whisper, and the Threefold Veil between Life, Death, and Knowledge. She is depicted as three women joined at the back, each facing a different direction: the Dextral Aspect, who gazes upward toward the stars and knowledge; the Sinister Aspect, who peers into the grave and rules the shadow realm; and the Silent Aspect, who closes her eyes and listens to the echoes of the Bell.

Her name is spoken in moonlit circles and funerary rites, and in the deepest vaults where forbidden knowledge is kept. She is revered by female magic-users, especially those who walk the moonlit edge between power and oblivion. Her worship forms two major paths:

  • The Dextral Path (Lawful): Scholars, archivists, and tonebinders who pursue divine wisdom and preserve the Sacred Chime.

  • The Sinister Path (Chaotic): Necromancers, underworld witches, and moon-shrouded assassins who embrace the void and feed the silence.

All who serve her learn to value knowledge over comfort, silence over noise, and balance over certainty.

👁️ Depiction

Chthonia Trimorphia is visualized as three pale, veiled women joined at the spine, their hair flowing together in strands of moonlight and shadow. One wears a circlet of bells, one a mask of bone, and one bears a third eye sealed with silver wax. In shrines, she is represented by a three-faced statue, a silver iris, or a silent bell suspended over a black altar.

🛕 Worship & Doctrine

  • Temples: Secret crypts, moonlit towers, and tone-chambers designed to capture natural resonance.

  • Clergy Titles: Moon-Touched, Triune Daughters, Librarians of the Bell, Hollow Witches

  • Holy Days:

    • Night of the Three Moons (any lunar trifold alignment)

    • Equinox of Silence (when light and shadow are balanced)

    • The Waning Rite (a funerary celebration held at each new moon)

  • Holy Symbol: A silver iris, or a tri-face moon

  • Sacred Animal: Dog – symbolic of death’s threshold; often sacrificed and reanimated in her service

  • Sacred Sound: The Resonant Bell, a mythical chime said to shape reality itself

⚖️ Tenets of the Faithful

Followers of Chthonia must:

  • Keep secrets sacred; to reveal knowledge without need is to kill it.

  • Honor the dead not with tears, but with remembrance and silence.

  • Learn the tone of all things—resonance reveals truth.

  • Embrace the path of three: knowledge, death, silence.

  • Return imbalance to harmony; destroy that which cannot be tuned.

Holy Garb of the Triune Daughters

“Speak not your truth. Ring it.”
Litany of the Threefold Veil

Chthonia’s faithful wear robes of black and silver, each trimmed in symbolic bells, threads of moonlight, or bone charms. Higher initiates carry resonant weapons, staves or blades forged with tuning marks. This garb is required for divine spellcasting and functions as the divine focus of her rites.

🧥 Stages of Sacred Garb

1. Robe of the Veil (25 gp)

  • Appearance: A black silk robe with silver bells at the hem and cuffs; when moving in silence, the bells never ring.

  • Focus Use: Required for 1st-level spell preparation.

“Begin in silence. End in sound.”

2. Circlet of Tuning (75 gp)

  • Appearance: A silver circlet inlaid with tiny harmonic glyphs. When placed on the brow, it hums faintly during spell preparation.

  • Focus Use: Required for 2nd-level spells and above.

  • Optional Effect: Once per day, allows the wearer to detect illusion or deception within 10’ (DM discretion).

“All false tones waver.”

3. Gorget of the Hollow Chime (300 gp)

  • Appearance: A heavy collar forged from moonsteel, etched with her sigil: three interwoven bells, one open, one cracked, one sealed.

  • Focus Use: Required for 3rd-level spells and higher.

  • Optional Effect: Once per day, may silence all sound in a 10’ radius for 1 round (no save, no concentration needed).

“Let none sing who have lost the note.”

⛓️ Rules for Divine Focus in Chthonia’s Faith

  • Spellcasting Restriction: Clerics must wear or carry their sacred garb to prepare and cast spells.

  • Defilement or Loss: If sacred garb is sullied by excessive light, unworthy speech, or sacrilege, it must be purified beneath moonlight with ritual bell-ringing and silence.

  • Turn Undead: Only the Dextral Path may turn undead, using harmonic resonance. Sinister Path clerics may command undead instead (with DM discretion).

  • The Broken Bell: Outer militant arm of the Triune Chorus; assassins, enforcers, and tonebinders. They strike in triads, wielding resonant blades and sound-based magic to eliminate cosmic “dissonance.”

“If you cannot be tuned, you will be silenced.”

  • The Triune Chorus: The secretive high priesthood; keepers of the Bell’s First Tone and loremasters of Chthonia’s sacred harmonics.

  • The Order of the Moon’s Toll: Lore-seekers and diviners who believe the Moon is an echo chamber for the Bell of Creation, storing the tonal memory of all that has ever been.

Marks of Servitude

  • 1st level spells: A faint, silvery crescent appears in one eye when in moonlight.

  • 2nd level spells: Skin becomes pale as marble, marked with faint ringing glyphs near the collarbone.

  • 3rd level spells: Hair begins to ripple as if moved by soundless wind during silence.

  • 4th level spells: Voice echoes with layered whispers when speaking alone.

  • 5th level spells: A third eye, invisible in daylight, opens on the brow, glowing silver when spells are cast.
