What Is the Nixthisis?

The Nixthisis is not a god, demon, or beast in any conventional sense. It is a being of pure perception—so potent that it can reshape reality simply by turning its attention toward something. To be noticed by the Nixthisis is to be altered.

Some scholars believe it is extraplanar, others claim it is extraterrestrial, but all agree on one point:

The Nixthisis does not belong here.

The Nixthisis appears to be pathosphagic—a creature that feeds on powerful emotions like sorrow, rage, fear, and despair. It does not feel in the way mortals do. Instead, it consumes feelings like food. And it grows.

It was likely drawn to Stonehell by the immense suffering that once saturated the dungeon:

• Screams from the prison’s darkest cells

• Anguish of prisoners forgotten by time

• Fury of the dead left unavenged

• Regret etched into stone by failed heroes

In this environment, the Nixthisis found a banquet of emotional energy—and it stayed.

A Turbine of Chaos

The Nixthisis functions like a massive psychic turbine. It consumes raw emotion and expels it as resonant waves of chaos, distorting thought, magic, and perception around it.

This chaotic output manifests as:

• Nightmares and visions

• Emotional instability in those nearby

• Wild surges in magic or memory

• Unraveling of time or identity in extreme cases

The longer the Nixthisis lingers, the more fragile reality becomes.

The Crucible Lattice

In ancient times, Elven ritualists and arcane engineers constructed a series of structures called Crucible Nodes to counteract the Nixthisis's resonance. These act as tuning pylons, forming a lattice that suppresses its influence by emitting harmonized frequencies.

• Does not imprison the Nixthisis

• Merely blunts its psychic presence

• Must be maintained, tuned, and repaired regularly

If too many nodes fall into disrepair:
