🐉 Sootmurk, the Grease Dragon
“The Black One of the Marsh” — feared along the King’s Road
Appearance
A massive, wingless wyrm with twelve slick, oil-sheened legs and skin as black as a midnight bog. Her hide glistens like tar in moonlight, dripping foul, shimmering grease into the pools she wallows in. The stench of burning pitch clings to her movements, and her passage leaves trails of black slime across the marsh.
Reputation
Sootmurk is a name spoken low in taverns along the Seeping Waste. She is blamed for the destruction of the ancient Ziggurat of Khalitharius a decade ago, and now squats amid its ruins. Travelers vanish along the Imperial Meridian Road where it skirts the Seeping Waste, their boots sometimes found later, grease-stained and empty.
Nature and Origins
Though she calls herself dragon, others dispute it.
-
Scholars suggest she is a young dragon malformed by the Seeping Waste’s mutagenic magic.
-
Craggwhistle gnomes mutter that she is no dragon at all, but a bastard child of the efreeti Khalitharius.
-
The gloops kneel in worship, calling her goddess and feeding her tributes of gold and goat.
The other true dragons of the region, normally jealous of rivals, have not moved against her. Some believe they do not even recognize her as kin. But as her hoard grows, their patience may falter.
Known Habits
-
Rarely leaves her marsh; she is indolent, preferring the comfort of her slick pools.
-
Takes tribute in gold, meat, and curios from gloops and fearful locals.
-
Feeds irregularly; her servants hunt on her behalf.
-
Vain and cruel in small ways, easily flattered but quick to lash out when displeased.
Dangers
-
Survivors describe a boiling spray of scalding oil, clinging like fire, that can burn through armor.
-
Her Gloops are vicious and aggressive, dragging victims to her pools.
-
Her territory is riddled with sinkholes and grease-slick trails, treacherous even without pursuit.
-
Some locals swear her presence draws other marsh predators toward the roads at dusk.
Territory
The northern Seeping Waste, centered on the ruined Ziggurat of Khalitharius. Avoid the Imperial Meridian Road at nightfall, when gloops roam and the grease-slick trails shine faintly in the dark.
Folk Wisdom
-
“If the wind smells of tar and tallow, turn back.”
-
“A clean boot is a safe boot.”
-
“Never take a gift from a gloop. You’ll end up in her puddle.”
