Ashen Knollsmen

🌑 Ashen Knollsmen

“The swamp remembers. We only keep its stories.”

Region: Southeastern Seeping Waste, near the sunken Ziggurat of Khalitharius
Keywords: Ancestral, Stubborn, Plant-Gatherers, Swamp-Dwellers

The Ashen Knollsmen are a remnant people, descended from those who once fought giants in the old barrow-wars. Their cairns in the western hills are mostly abandoned, for now they live within the Seeping Waste itself, in reed-woven camps stilted above the mire.

They wear blackened bone-charms to ward against living spells and mutagenic fogs, and every family keeps a charm etched with the names of the barrow-dead. Their survival depends on Ghost Pipe—the rare, parasitic white plant that grows thick around the Ziggurat of Khalitharius. Only by night and with ritual whispers can it be harvested; boiled into poultices, it heals wounds and wards fevers. Without it, the Knollsmen sicken and die.

Beliefs & Practices:

  • Claim kinship with the dead buried beneath the swamp, calling themselves Kin of the Ash.

  • Teach that Ghost Pipe blooms wherever comrades quarrel and blood is spilled—proof of the Waste’s hunger for grief.

  • Refuse titles of nobility; every Knollsman is simply “Kin,” bound by oath to each other and to the swamp.

Current Struggles:

  • Fearful of the gloop-worshippers and their dragon-mistress who now haunt the Ziggurat.

  • Their Ghost Pipe harvest is failing—rituals disrupted, pilgrims gone missing.

  • Desperate for allies to recover access to the plant before their medicine runs dry.

Relations:

  • Distrust the Seeping Sons as desecrators who treat the swamp as a larder of poisons.

  • Trade reluctantly with the Mirewards, who map the Waste but never stay long.

  • Tell old stories of Craggwhistle gnomes—sometimes as allies, sometimes as betrayers who brought Khalitharius here.
