Navlok was raised as the brash runt, to his older brother's stoic demeanor. Being less successful than Ulvok, he was often overshadowed by him, leading to a desperation for adoration from his family. Luckily, his parent's recognized this by the time Navlok was 16, and were able to remedy most of his attention-seeking behavior, but his brashness, and want to be flashy never left.
By 20, Ulvok had been in the Night Watch for the Otari Graveyard for almost 3 years, and Navlok felt like it was his turn to earn a name for himself. So he talked to his family and received an apprenticeship & charter to be taken onto a merchant ship's crew as a deckhand. But what first seemed like a merchant ship's crew soon turned about to be a crew of corsairs, known for pillaging wealthy ships headed to the harbors of the nearby Metropolis, Absalom. This did not trouble the young chap at all, and gave him better excuse to practice daring maneuvers in his swordplay. The crew would return to Otari about twice a year to peddle their ill-gotten goods, and Navlok would always head to Wrin's Wonders, as he often took loot that was more curious than simple gold coins and other jewelry. He and the eccentric proprietor, Wrin, grew to have quite a prosperous business relationship.
However, when Navlok was 23, Ulvok was tragically killed in the Otari Fishery Incident. Word was sent to Navlok, but it took months for the message to arrive. When Navlok returned, his father had fallen ill, and both his parents were in quite a depressed place. It was then that he knew he needed to be there for his family. And he gave up piracy, and the facade of being a merchant to help nurse his family back to health. He took on small fishing charters, and sailed out fisherman for fishing expeditions to make ends meet, and was home every night to play with Uni Abihs, the family dog, and also to take care of his parents. The crew he worked under continued to bring him curiosities to sell to Wrin as well.
