During the Crusades, Kaynan was often found burying his fallen comrades or spending time tending to the wounded. Unbeknownst to him, his acts of servitude did not go unnoticed. In the dark of night, as he lay resting, Kaynan heard an ancient voice call upon him:
"Kaynan Gelveron of Sothis, your compassion for those who have passed and your drive to rid the world of those who should have passed is impeccable. Go forth in this crusade in my name and my blessing. I, Anubis, shall be your guide and lord. Go forth as my Champion!"
Kaynan rose to his feet and knelt in the presence of his new deity. A gentle azure light enshrouded him and coalesced into the shape of a flail which now affixed itself to his side. Kaynan praised his new lord and began a life anew.
