Helena Woodward, nee Goddard, is the mother of Amber Woodward. She was a multi-medalist Olympic swimmer. She raised her daughter with a love of physical activity.
She's a massive proponent for social justice, equality, and standing up to inequality not with quiet resistance but an aggressive "SCREW YOU!". During her time as an Olympic athlete she was controversial for raising various flags (feminist, LGBTQ+), and protest signs, rather than the American flag during wins.
During a vacation, while snorkeling, Helena was taken by an undercurrent and slammed her head against some rocks knocking her unconscious. When she was recovered she had a strange shard in her forehead, and no visible wounds despite the blood. At the hospital it was found this gemstone seemed to grow and root around her brain. She was otherwise healthy and entirely unchanged. When she found out it granted her the ability to create currents of speed (more effective in water) she was shattered; her Olympic career was over.
In its wake she joined the Coast Guard and became an invaluable asset in saving lives using her abilities.
