Word reached the resistance, one of Kuato's lieutenants from Alderheart, Evelyn, is being held at the prison in Ashbarrow. The party needed to break her out before she they kill her, or worse, get her to spill secrets about the resistnace. Snow knew Evelyn and was very eager to start the mission and rescue her.
Matty Goodberry was able to provide a map of the inside of the prison. She was pretty sure it's accurate, but no guarantees.
The party travelled to Ashbarrow and spoke with Digger O'Greedy, a Hedge who helped build the jail. He said their best bet was to dig their way in, he knew of a corner in a cell where the pavers weren't quite put in that well. While Digger put together a team to dig a passageway, the party used the time to scout the jail out. They also got Amachai into the Tender's Lodge so he could make notes on the teleportation circle.
Within a few days the party was ready to go. As some added insurance they poisoned the food that was taken to the guards just before they broke in.
It went well on the inside except for the fact Evelyn wasn't there. Tam Loxwood and Buff Orpington were in a cell together and guessed that Evelyn had been taken to a nearby barracks the gnolls used for interrogations.
The party surrounded the barracks and could hear a gnoll asking Evelyn questions about the resistance. They broke in and got Evelyn out but not before the gnoll could sound an alarm. While the room was mostly bare, a map did catch the eye of the party.
It was a tough fight as the party regrouped and made an escape to the nearby woods, all the while Snow was shouting that this wasn't Evelyn while she insisted she was and they needed to get away before even more gnolls showed up.
Once they were safely away they took a moment to sort out what was going on. Evelyn clearly knew about the resistance, claimed to know Kuato and wanted to speak with her. At the same time she admitted she didn't know Snow.
Adina cast detect magic on her and it revealed she was under the influence of a Wish spell. This stunned the party. First, that the gnolls had a caster powerful enough to cast the spell. Also, what exactly had been done to this strig to make her believe she was Evelyn.
All they knew was that she shouldn't get near Kuato, wherever Kuato was. Maybe it was time to have a heart to heart talk with George.
Back at Wolpertinger Caves they placed Evelyn in the anti-magic circle. Inside the circle she was confused and worried. She said her name was Jenny, but remembered thinking she was Evelyn. She'd been part of the Resistance and Ashbarrow, but had been caught. There was a slight gap in her memory and then she remembers believing she was Evelyn.
When she left the anti-magic circle, she went back to believing she was Evelyn. For now, she'd have to live inside the anti-magic circle until they could figure out what to do.
