Amber Fever

465

Origin and Nature:

Amber Fever is a deadly and mysterious disease that has plagued the land, characterized by a relentless progression of symptoms that culminate in either death or a horrifying transformation. The fever is believed to be a necromantic hijacking of the mycelium network, with the fungus responsible for the disease radiating detectable necromantic energy. This has led to widespread speculation that Amber Fever is either the result of a wizard's experiment gone horribly wrong or an intentional attempt to trigger a zombie apocalypse.

The disease is thought to have originated on the Island of Moog, a place with a long history of powerful wizards drawn by its uncorrupted mana. Among the suspected creators are the The Arcane Octad, a group of eight wizards who settled on Moog over 300 years ago. Though most, if not all, of the Octad are believed to be dead, their legacy may have left behind this devastating plague. Unfortunately, given the passage of time, any hope of finding answers or a cure from them is slim.

Symptoms and Progression:

  1. Initial Symptoms:

    • Coughing, fever, chills, and general pain throughout the body. The disease initially mimics a severe flu or pneumonia but quickly escalates beyond conventional illnesses.
  2. Intermediate Symptoms:

    • The patient experiences excruciating pain, particularly in the joints and muscles, accompanied by a deepening cough that produces an amber-colored mucus. As the disease progresses, necrotic patches may appear on the skin, and the victim begins to show signs of cognitive decline, including confusion and aggression.
  3. Final Stages:

    • Without intervention, the fever drives the victim into a state of madness and ultimately death. Upon death, the body rapidly reanimates as a Zombie, a creature driven by a primal hunger for the living.

Treatment:

  • Seregon Serum:

    • The only known treatment for Amber Fever is the Seregon Serum, an alchemical concoction that can halt the progression of the disease if administered in a timely manner. The serum is in high demand and difficult to produce, making it a precious commodity. If the serum is administered during the early stages of the disease, the patient can fully recover, though they are left with limited immunity that lasts only 6 to 12 months.
  • Delayed Treatment:

    • If the serum is administered after the disease has advanced too far, the victim is saved from becoming a Jungle Zombie but is instead transformed into a Darakhul, a ghoul-like being who must continue to take regular doses of the serum to avoid a complete transformation into a mindless ghoul (about 6% of the population is Darakhul). These Darakhul retain their memories and personalities, but they are forever changed, driven by the hunger and needs of their new undead nature.

Current Research and Theories:

  • No Vaccine:

    • Efforts to develop a vaccine for Amber Fever have so far been unsuccessful, with most attempts resulting in the subjects transforming into Darakhul rather than gaining immunity. This has further complicated the response to the disease, as even the best medical minds struggle to understand its full nature.
  • Arcane Origins:

    • The connection between Amber Fever and necromantic energy has led many arcanists to believe that the disease was engineered, possibly by the Arcane Octad or another powerful mage. The exact reasons behind its creation remain unknown—whether it was a failed experiment or an intentional plague—but the devastation it causes is undeniable.
  • Island of Moog:

    • The Island of Moog is at the center of these theories, believed to be the birthplace of Amber Fever. With its history of powerful wizards and uncorrupted mana, it’s seen as the most likely source of the disease. However, with the Arcane Octad long gone, the truth may remain buried with them.

Public Response and Impact:

Amber Fever has created a sense of fear and uncertainty among the population. The knowledge that the disease is linked to necromantic forces has led to widespread paranoia, and the appearance of Zombies and Darakhul has only fueled the panic. Infected individuals are often isolated or ostracized, with some communities resorting to extreme measures to prevent the spread of the fever.

Adventurers and healers frequently venture to the Island of Moog in search of answers, but few return, and those who do often bring back only more questions. The Arcane Octad, now viewed with a mix of fear and fascination, are the subject of countless rumors and legends. Some believe that remnants of their power still linger on the island, potentially holding the key to curing the fever—or unleashing even greater horrors.

Summary: Amber Fever is a terrifying disease with origins steeped in necromantic magic. While the Seregon Serum offers some hope for survival, it is not without its risks and limitations. The fever’s ties to the Island of Moog and the mysterious Arcane Octad add layers of intrigue and danger, making it a persistent threat in a world already fraught with peril. The struggle to understand and combat Amber Fever continues, with lives hanging in the balance as the truth remains elusive.
