Crystals and Vatteries: The first use of crystals was to power train locomotives. Six stations are arrayed on the west side of the city against the outer wall. Tracks head out into the jungle, destinations unknown. Tracks used to line the streets of Seregon, but they have since been dismantled over the last 100 years. Higher end districts often left the tracks as a historical oddity, polishing the wood and keeping the steel rust free. Lower class districts sold the tracks for scrap. For more details, see Crystal Technology.

Airships were initially invented by harnessing temperamental air elementals. The Walraven Consortium has since invented a magic crystal, the Starfire Crystal, that can levitate and propel airships on the aether waves in the air, assisted by electrified ethersilk sails. They have spun off this invention to three noble houses in Seregon, each competing to develop newer, more powerful and more efficient crystals. See the Schoonoven family, for on example. An airship thus outfitted generally costs three times what a sailing ship would cost.

Each nation has a fleet of worldwide trading ships, of which perhaps a third are ever in port. There is competition to advance this technology with treaties to limit militarization. See below for the small military fleet.

Seregon has 67 airships.

What is Ether?

Magic is cast using mana. Mana is generally conserved and reconfigures itself in the environment, but a small by product is ether. Ether is invisible and tends to rise and concentrate in the atmosphere. Where there is a lot of magic, there is a lot of ether.

Vat grown crystals are capable of harnessing ether and allowing airships to fly, trains to motivate and streetlights to illuminate. There are some new energy based weapons using crystals as well.

Crystals are expensive, generally doubling the cost of ships or trains equipped with them.

Ether Mages
Tapping into ether is not recommended as it inevitably results in the loss of sanity. Yet, these (NPC) wizards make the sacrifice to provide airship navigation and city defense.

Military Fleet

The airship fleet of Seregon is a carefully curated group of 12 vessels, each designed to resemble merchant ships, blending in with the city's commercial traffic while being fully equipped for defense. The fleet is strategically spread across the city's docking towers to ensure a swift response to any aerial threat. Here's a detailed breakdown of the fleet's composition:

1. Design and Appearance

  • Disguised as Merchant Ships: The airships are designed to look like ordinary merchant vessels, making them less conspicuous. They have broad hulls, large cargo holds, and standard rigging, which helps them blend in with civilian air traffic.
  • Hidden Weaponry: Despite their commercial appearance, each ship is equipped with retractable etheric cannons and other advanced weaponry. The cannons are hidden beneath hatches that can be quickly deployed in battle.
  • Crystal Power: The ships are powered by high-grade Starfire Lift crystals, the best in the world, allowing them to maneuver swiftly and maintain altitude under heavy loads. These crystals are sourced from the Schoonoven Vattery and take decades to grow.
  • Durable Construction: of reinforced wooden hulls with iron plating on critical sections, providing both protection and buoyancy. The ships are also outfitted with magical wards to protect against various threats, including magical attacks and boarding attempts.

2. Fleet Organization

  • Command Structure: Each ship has a command hierarchy led by a Captain, with the XO (Executive Officer) serving as the second-in-command. The Captain and XO are seasoned officers with extensive experience in both naval and aerial combat.
  • Crews: The ships each have a minimum crew of 20 members, with the ability to load up to 96 total members in times of trouble (mercenaries more than likely). This includes a mix of specialists such as pilots, engineers, gunners, and boatswains. The crew is drawn from the best of Seregon's merchant fleets, ensuring efficiency and cohesion.
  • Positions and Roles:
    • Captain: The overall commander of the ship, responsible for strategy and decision-making.
    • XO (Executive Officer): The Captain's second-in-command, in charge of daily operations and discipline.
    • Pilot/Helmsman: Responsible for steering the ship and navigating through Seregon’s skies.
    • Apprentice Pilot: Learning the ropes under the Helmsman’s guidance.
    • Engineer: Manages the ship's mechanics, particularly the crystal power and steam systems.
    • Doctor: The ship's medical expert, treating injuries and managing crew health.
    • Gunnery Officer: In charge of the ship's weaponry, particularly the etheric cannons.
    • Gunner: Operates the cannons and other weapons, ensuring the ship is battle-ready.
    • Boatswain (Bo's'n): Leads the boarding party and is skilled in close combat and shooting etheric weapons.

3. Fleet Capabilities

  • Stealth and Surprise: The ships are capable of moving through Seregon’s skies without drawing attention. Their merchant ship disguises allow them to approach potential threats unnoticed.
  • Rapid Deployment: Strategically spread across the city, the fleet can quickly converge on any area under threat. The crystal-powered engines provide them with exceptional speed and maneuverability.
  • Advanced Weaponry: Each ship carries enough firepower to engage and neutralize enemy airships. The etheric cannons are particularly effective against other flying vessels.
  • Crew Expertise: The crew’s background in merchant fleets means they are well-versed in navigation, trade, and diplomacy, in addition to combat skills. This versatility makes them effective in a wide range of scenarios, from open battle to covert operations.

4. Potential for Expansion

  • Battle Cruiser Plans: Although not yet implemented, there are plans to expand the fleet with heavier battle cruisers. These would be more overtly militaristic, with larger crews and heavier weaponry, designed to deter any large-scale aerial assault.

The fleet represents Seregon’s commitment to protecting its skies without provoking an arms race, balancing defense with diplomacy and trade. The ships are a testament to the city's ingenuity and strategic foresight, ready to defend Seregon while maintaining the appearance of a thriving, peaceful trade hub.
