How it Works

Amber Fever: The Airborne Plague of Seregon

Amber Fever is a deadly and insidious fungal infection that spreads through airborne spores. The disease is as much a magical curse as it is a biological plague, making it a unique and horrifying threat to the people of Seregon and beyond.

How Amber Fever Spreads:

Amber Fever is transmitted through spores released by a specific type of fungus that drifts through the air, especially in densely populated or humid areas. The fungus settles on surfaces, plants, and even people. The spores are nearly invisible, and they can survive in the air for long periods. When the spores land in inhabited areas, they begin to release subtle magical energies, which many believe compels living beings to touch them, despite warnings and common sense to avoid doing so.

Mind Control Theory:

Victims of Amber Fever are often drawn inexplicably to the fungus, even after being explicitly warned about its dangers. This has led to the belief that the fungus has a form of mind control over its potential hosts. It exudes an otherworldly allure that compels individuals to make contact with the fungal growth. Those infected may claim they felt a "calling" or irresistible urge to touch the fungus, supporting this theory.

Infection and Incubation:

Once touched, the fungus immediately implants a tiny, magical flower bulb inside the brain of the host. For the next 24 hours, the bulb grows rapidly, feeding off the host's body. As the infection progresses, the victim experiences severe fever, hallucinations, and unbearable pain as the fungus spreads throughout the nervous system.

After 24 hours, the host dies, but the bulb continues to grow within the body, animating the corpse with magical energy. The victim rises as a zombie, driven by the malevolent influence of the mycelium network—a dark web of necromantic energy connected to the fungus.

Seregon Serum:

The only known cure for Amber Fever is Seregon Serum, a rare and expensive concoction made from the organs of zombies harvested in underground labs. The serum must be administered within the first few hours of infection to completely eradicate the bulb before it reaches maturity.

If the serum is administered too late, the bulb’s growth is suppressed but not entirely eliminated. The victim becomes a Darakhul, a sentient undead creature that retains their intelligence and memories but is cursed with an unrelenting hunger and the slow progression of the fungal infection.

The Darakhul and the Serum's Role:

The serum, while powerful, cannot reverse the transformation to a Darakhul once it has begun. However, it can halt the progression of the infection by changing the composition of the bulb inside the host's brain. The serum temporarily severs the bulb’s connection to the mycelium network, preventing the Darakhul from being enslaved to the network’s influence or transforming further into a mindless ghoul.

Darakhul must take regular doses of the serum to prevent the bulb from growing again, ensuring they retain control over their faculties and do not devolve into a full-fledged ghoul. Without the serum, the infection will inevitably overtake them, driving them to madness and eventually reducing them to a feral state.

Amber Fever remains a constant and terrifying threat, its spores lurking invisibly in the air, always waiting to claim new victims. As long as the source of the mycelium network remains unknown and unchecked, the threat of Amber Fever and its zombified victims will continue to spread.
