Ambergris the Wizard

Archmage

Bearer of the Staff of Lost Tarab

Ambergris is an elderly man with a frazzled appearance. His long, white beard is unkempt, and his robes, though once fine, are now tattered and stained with ink, crumbs, and the remnants of various magical substances. He carries a weathered staff that a dustry crystal that looks more like a gnarled walking stick and a satchel filled with an odd assortment of trinkets, scrolls, and half-eaten pastries. His eyes, though often lost in thought, hold a deep and ancient wisdom that surfaces when least expected. He moves his fingers to twist a ring that is not there, perhaps a long lost love. His voice is soft and raspy, often trailing off mid-sentence as his mind wanders to other thoughts or memories.

Setting: The Alchemical Bean, a cozy coffee shop in the Kerkhof Ferry District. Ambergris is sitting at his usual corner table, sipping on a steaming cup of coffee. The shop is quiet, with only a few patrons scattered about, enjoying their drinks and reading. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air.

Characters: The party approaches Ambergris, needing information about a powerful artifact rumored to be hidden in the Old Necropolis.

Adventurer: "Master Ambergris, we’ve heard you might know something about the Obsidian Shard. It’s said to be hidden in the Old Necropolis. Can you help us find it?"

Ambergris: (His eyes slowly lift from his coffee, focusing on the adventurers as if seeing them for the first time.) "Obsidian Shard, you say? Hmm, yes… a dangerous thing, that. Held great power, once. Or was it twice?" (He furrows his brow, as if trying to recall something distant.) "Yes, yes… buried deep, under the third tombstone from the left, or was it the right? A trap, I think… no, definitely a trap. Or a cat. Cats are always a danger…"

Adventurer: "A trap? Can you tell us more about it?"

Ambergris: (He waves his hand dismissively, as if brushing away an annoying thought.) "Ah, traps and dangers, they’re all the same… The shard… yes, the shard… bound to the soul of the last king, no, the first king. His spirit guards it… or was it a dragon? Dragons are tricky, you know." (He takes a long sip of his coffee, his mind wandering.) "Hmm… dragons… have you seen my hat? No, no, never mind. The Old Necropolis… yes, be careful of the mist. Or was it fog? No, no, definitely mist…"

Adventurer: "The mist? What does it do?"

Ambergris: (He looks at them, suddenly serious, his eyes sharp and focused.) "It whispers secrets… secrets that drive you mad. Follow the voice that doesn’t speak, and you might just survive." (Just as quickly as the moment of clarity came, it vanishes, and he returns to his coffee, muttering to himself.) "Now, where did I put that blasted hat…?"

Adventurer: "Thank you, Master Ambergris. We’ll be careful."

Ambergris: (He nods absently, already lost in his thoughts again.) "Yes, yes… careful… and if you find my hat, do bring it back, won’t you? It’s rather important… I think."

An Evening at the Elephant

The Elephant's Embrace

Ambergris sat in his usual spot at The Elephant's Embrace, a dimly lit corner where he could observe the room without being disturbed. The establishment was renowned in the Kerkhof Ferry District, its reputation built on the enchanting performances of Elara, a graceful elven dancer who seemed to float across the floor with every movement.

Tonight, Elara danced just for him. Her long, silken hair flowed like water, and her lithe form moved with an effortless grace that captured the essence of the music. Ambergris watched with a distant but appreciative gaze, his mind somewhere between the present and some far-off memory. The soft notes of the lute played in the background, and Elara’s movements were hypnotic, each step and turn pulling him further into a trance.

But then, something cut through the haze of the performance. A scent—foul and unnatural—drifted into Ambergris’s awareness. He sniffed the air, his senses sharpening as the scent grew stronger. His expression hardened, and the distant look in his eyes was replaced by one of fierce determination. Without warning, he stood up abruptly, startling Elara, who paused mid-dance to watch him.

Ambergris’s gaze locked onto a man sitting across the room, a dark figure clad in nondescript clothing. The man appeared ordinary to the casual observer, but to Ambergris, the truth was unmistakable. He stormed across the room, the Staff of Lost Tarab in hand, and pointed it directly at the man.

"You!" Ambergris bellowed, his voice booming through the tavern like a thunderclap. The room fell silent as all eyes turned to him. "I know you for what you truly are—a foul servant of Van Droth of the The Arcane Octad. Harbinger of the desert waste! Disperser of the Yan Ki! Confidant of Crannog! Preserver of wickedness! King and kidnapper! Be gone before I smite you from this world and send you back to the foul abyss that spawned you!"

The man, now the center of attention, froze. For a brief moment, his facade flickered. His skin rippled and distorted, and in the blink of an eye, he transformed into a hulking figure with the head of an elephant, towering over the patrons. The Ravana. Gasps filled the room, but just as quickly, the transformation reversed, and the man resumed his human form. Panic flared in his eyes, and without a word, he bolted for the door, shoving tables and chairs aside as he fled into the night.

Banar, the elephantine proprietor of The Elephant’s Embrace, had been watching the scene unfold from behind the bar. His massive frame was calm, but his eyes were sharp as they followed the fleeing man. His bodyguard, a burly man named Grom, stepped forward, confusion on his face.

"Relative of yours?" Grom asked, glancing at Banar.

Banar shook his head slowly. "No, but there’s something foul afoot. Go find Ilmadia Mianala. We’ll need her to sort this out."

Grom nodded and hurried out the door in pursuit of the mysterious man, while the rest of the patrons buzzed with excitement and fear. Yet, as if nothing had happened, Ambergris turned back to his table and sat down, his attention returning to Elara, who was still standing there, stunned.

"Now, where were we, my dear?" Ambergris said, his voice calm and gentle as if he had just been discussing the weather. "Ah, yes, your dance… such grace, such beauty. You remind me of the ancient elves of Sahar. Did I ever tell you about the time I met the Queen of the Moonlit Oasis? Quite a story, that one…"

Elara hesitated for a moment, then smiled and continued her dance, her movements once again flowing with the music. Ambergris watched her with a contented smile, the earlier confrontation already forgotten, as if it were nothing more than a brief distraction in the endless stream of his thoughts.

The patrons returned to their conversations, but the atmosphere had changed. The presence of dark magic had been felt, and the name Van Droth lingered in the air like a curse. But for now, at least, the danger had passed, and Ambergris was back in his peaceful corner, lost in the enchanting world of Elara’s dance.
