Special Abilities
1. Damage Reflection (Scaling Ability)
1st-5th Level: Minor Reflection
- When the bearer is struck by a melee attack, as a reaction, after the damage is determined, the shield unleashes a burst of energy. The attacker takes 1d6 radiant damage, and the Sentinel Shield absorbs the attack, healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. This effect works once long rest.
6th-8th Level: Amplified Reflection
- The damage reflection increases to 2d6 radiant damage, and healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. This effect works once per long rest.
9th Level+: Full Reflection
- The damage reflection increases to 3d6 radiant damage, healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. Additionally, the radiant damage bypasses resistances, making it more effective against resistant creatures. This ability recharges after a short rest.
2. Healing Aura (Growing Effect)
1st-5th Level: Minor Healing Surge
- When forced to make a saving throw that causes damage, the shield exudes divine saltwater, granting the bearer and allies within 10 feet a 1d4 healing at the start of the bearer’s turn. This healing increases to 1d6 when the bearer is below half health. Once per short rest.
6th-8th Level: Bolstering Waters
- The radius increases to 15 feet, and the healing aura becomes more potent, healing allies for 2d4 once per short rest. If the bearer or an ally is below half health, they gain 2d6 instead.
9th Level+: Tidal Wave of Life
- The aura extends to 30 feet. Once per short or long rest, allies gain 3d6 healing at the start of the bearer’s turn, or 3d8 if the bearer is below half health. This wave of healing also removes one condition (blindness, deafness, poison, or paralyzed) from affected allies.
3. Prophetic Vision (Limited Use Ability)
At 6th Level, the shield grants the bearer brief visions of danger. As a reaction, the bearer can gain advantage on a saving throw or cause an enemy to have disadvantage on an attack roll targeting them or an ally. This ability recharges after a long rest.
At 9th Level, the bearer may also foresee an impending disaster and can cast divination (without material components) once per week, as the shield channels the wisdom of the Sentinels and the will of the people. This ability allows them to seek divine guidance before crucial events.
4. Protection from Calamity (Ultimate Power)
- At 9th Level, the Sentinel Shield radiates a powerful aura of protection once per long rest. For 1 minute, the bearer and allies within 30 feet gain resistance to all damage, and enemies have disadvantage on attacks against those affected. During this time, the shield hums with divine power, its lighthouse motif glowing brilliantly as it shields those nearby from even the most overwhelming threats.
The Enemies Motives: Why They Want the Sentinel Shield
Symbol of Hope—Turned to Despair:
The Sentinel Shield, as a beacon of hope and protection for Seregon, represents the unbreakable spirit of the people. However, in the wrong hands, the shield’s energy could be twisted. The enemies of Seregon, particularly those who thrive on chaos and despair, wish to use the shield to corrupt its power. By reversing the flow of its energies, they can plunge the city into hopelessness, turning the very symbol of resistance into a tool of subjugation. The shield could be used to emit an aura of despair, weakening morale and spreading fear among the citizens, making Seregon ripe for conquest.Denial of Prophecy:
According to the Prophecy of the Oracle of the Ivory Goddess, the bearer of the Sentinel Shield will lead Seregon in its darkest hour. The villains—likely an evil faction or cult—understand that by possessing the shield, they can not only prevent the fulfillment of this prophecy but also ensure that Seregon will fall in the face of its enemies. Without the shield’s protection, the city will be vulnerable to attack, both from external forces and internal strife.Harnessing the Shield’s Divine Power for Dark Purposes:
The villains might seek to exploit the shield’s ability to reflect damage and heal allies. If they can corrupt its magic, they could channel the healing aura to serve their own ranks, using the shield to empower their army while leaving Seregon defenseless. The radiant energy of the shield could be warped to drain life instead of healing, turning the battlefield into a death trap for any who oppose them.Control Over the Myconid Sovereign:
The shield’s connection to the ancient powers of Seregon, including its ties to the myconids, may be critical in controlling these enigmatic creatures. By possessing the Sentinel Shield, the villains could potentially command the myconids, either by completing or perverting the ancient pact. This would give them access to the myconids' spore servants and their powerful ability to control life and death through fungi.Tool for Conquering More than Seregon:
The shield, in the hands of a master tactician or dark overlord, could serve as the linchpin for larger conquests. It could be used to bolster morale in a tyrant’s army or break the spirit of resistance movements across the land. If the shield is seen as a tool that brings victory, controlling it gives the wielder a strategic advantage not only in Seregon but in any campaign of conquest.
Thus, the Sentinel Shield stands as both a relic of hope and a target for those who wish to bring ruin. Its role in the coming battle for Seregon is central, and whoever controls it holds the fate of the city in their hands.
