Sentinel Shield

The Sentinel Shield is a legendary artifact, first created by the ancient Olmoy civilization to protect the city of Seregon with the powerful Tikhurats of Seregon, a magical barrier activated by twelve jewels set within the shield. Originally a round shield, it was later modified into a kite shield bearing the symbol of Seregon—a lighthouse amidst crashing waves, representing the city's resilience against powerful forces. These waves are not merely ornamental but come alive during combat, swirling and crashing to repel attacks.

The shield's final known wielder was Bu Pe, a priest of the Great Old One Nyctelios. During the final battle when Nyctelios was banished, Bu Pe’s faltering connection to his master led to the breach of the Tikhurat field, marking the end of its use.

The Sentinel Shield is steeped in history, having been wielded by the ~Sentinels of Seregon, a heroic order of warriors who fought to protect the city and its lands from ancient threats, including Great Old Ones, sea giants, and other formidable foes. Though the Sentinels eventually disbanded, the shield was lost to history, awaiting a new hero to rise in Seregon’s darkest hour—a prophecy (Sentinel Shield Prophecy)foretold by the Oracle of the Ivory Goddess. The prophecy warns that the shield, if misused, could bring ruin, yet in the hands of a true hero, it will become the beacon of hope needed to save Seregon.

The shield is not merely a defensive tool but a living artifact, imbued with the power to reflect damage as healing energy, release holy salt water with protective properties, and generate awe-inspiring effects in battle. However, its legacy carries a burden—the next wielder must be ready to shoulder the hopes of Seregon’s people and face the threats that seek to control its power.

The Prophecy of the Ivory Goddess speaks of the shield’s return during a cosmic event, potentially the Kilonova of Gwahlur-Yajur, when a hero of blood and valor will arise to lead Seregon to victory. This hero must embody the spirit of the Sentinels, as the shield bonds only with those willing to sacrifice for the greater good.

The Sentinel Shield awaits a worthy champion to restore its legacy and defend Seregon once more.

The Sentinel Shield is an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship, both a historical relic and a powerful magical artifact. Its design reflects the melding of ancient traditions with the modern modifications made during the height of the Sentinels of Seregon's influence. Here is a more detailed description:

Appearance and Structure

  • Size and Shape: Originally a round shield of the ancient Olmoy, the Sentinel Shield was later transformed into a more modern kite-shaped shield, giving it a sleek, elongated form. Despite its age and modifications, the shield remains in pristine condition, with no signs of wear or damage.
  • Material: The shield is forged from a rare, unidentifiable metal that has a gleaming silvery sheen but is surprisingly lightweight. This metal is imbued with magical energy, making it nearly indestructible.

The Front of the Shield

  • Lighthouse and Waves Motif: The front of the shield displays the symbol of Seregon: a grand lighthouse, standing defiant against stormy seas. The lighthouse is carved in exquisite detail, with intricate stonework visible in its foundation. Surrounding the lighthouse are meticulously etched waves, depicted in mid-crash, as if frozen in time. The waves, made from the same metal as the shield, seem to shimmer and shift as light plays over them.

During battle, these waves animate, swirling around the lighthouse in response to attacks. The motion of the waves intensifies with the heat of combat, growing more aggressive as the shield reflects and redirects the energy of enemy strikes.

  • Living Magic: As a reflection of the shield’s power, the waves erupt with magical energy when the shield is struck, turning defensive moments into bursts of divine magic. When an incoming blow is blocked, the shield pulses with a radiant light, and the sounds of roaring waves fill the air, giving the impression of an unyielding storm protecting the wielder.

The Back of the Shield

  • Olmoy Legacy: The reverse side of the shield retains the ancient Olmoy round design, which has been embedded into the kite-shaped frame. This part of the shield is a mesmerizing display of Olmoy craftsmanship. Twelve glowing gems are carefully set into the inner rim of the round shield, each representing the Jewels of Chan-Kaanul—emerald, topaz, sapphire, aquamarine, ruby, onyx, amethyst, pearl, garnet, diamond, opal, and turquoise. Each gem is a focus for the Tikhurat field, an ancient magical barrier that once protected Seregon.

  • Glowing Jewels: When the Tikhurats are active, these gems glow with an otherworldly light, their radiance intensifying based on the strength of the magic at play. Each jewel pulses faintly when the shield’s power is tapped into, acting as a visual representation of the shield’s connection to Seregon's ancient magical defenses.

  • Ancient Glyphs: Surrounding the gems are ancient Olmoy glyphs, etched in delicate, angular patterns. These glyphs serve as both decoration and arcane runes, weaving the shield’s latent magic into a cohesive force. Scholars who study the glyphs note their references to ancient legends and lost magic, linking the shield to the powerful rites of Yaxun B’alam and his priesthood. The glyphs are still a mystery to most, and it is said that only a true hero chosen by the shield can understand and fully unlock their power.

Magical Auras and Effects

  • Wave Animation: In combat, the waves on the shield’s surface move and crash in response to attacks, almost as though they have a life of their own. They reflect the force of a blow with magical energy, often sending a shockwave back toward the attacker or turning the damage into healing waters for nearby allies. This effect is both protective and restorative, reinforcing the shield's theme of safeguarding the wielder and their companions.

  • Holy Salt Water: The Sentinel Shield also releases holy salt water in times of great need, imbuing the battlefield with divine energy. The water is said to have healing and protective properties, able to cleanse wounds, bolster defenses, and rejuvenate those who fight alongside the shield's bearer. This water shimmers faintly, leaving a trail of glowing mist as it flows from the shield’s enchanted surface.

  • Auditory and Visual Effects: When the shield activates its magical properties, the sounds of crashing waves and a howling storm accompany its defensive actions. This immersive effect heightens the shield’s presence on the battlefield, inspiring awe in allies and fear in enemies.

Symbolism and Legacy

  • Seregon's Lighthouse: The lighthouse on the shield is a symbol of hope, vigilance, and protection. It represents Seregon as a beacon of safety, standing firm against overwhelming forces. The waves crashing against it symbolize the relentless power of the enemies of Seregon, forces that, despite their strength, are destined to break against the city’s resilience.

  • Jewels of Chan-Kaanul: The twelve jewels are more than decorative; they represent the essence of the Tikhurats, the magical fields that once surrounded Seregon. Each jewel channels ancient power, and their glow signals the activation of protective magic. When the shield is in the hands of a worthy bearer, the jewels glow brighter, reinforcing the shield’s power.

  • Ancient Prophecy: According to the Oracle of the Ivory Goddess, the shield is destined to resurface in a time of great peril for Seregon. The bearer of the Sentinel Shield will play a crucial role in the city’s future, leading it against its greatest enemies. This prophecy has made the shield an object of both hope and dread, as its reappearance signifies a time of great conflict but also the chance for a heroic savior to emerge.

The Sentinel Shield is not just a relic; it is a living artifact steeped in history, magic, and prophecy, waiting for the moment when it will once again shine in the hands of a true hero, defending Seregon against the storms of fate.

Special Abilities

1. Damage Reflection (Scaling Ability)

  • 1st-5th Level: Minor Reflection

    • When the bearer is struck by a melee attack, as a reaction, after the damage is determined, the shield unleashes a burst of energy. The attacker takes 1d6 radiant damage, and the Sentinel Shield absorbs the attack, healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. This effect works once long rest.
  • 6th-8th Level: Amplified Reflection

    • The damage reflection increases to 2d6 radiant damage, and healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. This effect works once per long rest.
  • 9th Level+: Full Reflection

    • The damage reflection increases to 3d6 radiant damage, healing all allies within 30 feet for the same amount of damage dealt to the attacker. Additionally, the radiant damage bypasses resistances, making it more effective against resistant creatures. This ability recharges after a short rest.

2. Healing Aura (Growing Effect)

  • 1st-5th Level: Minor Healing Surge

    • When forced to make a saving throw that causes damage, the shield exudes divine saltwater, granting the bearer and allies within 10 feet a 1d4 healing at the start of the bearer’s turn. This healing increases to 1d6 when the bearer is below half health. Once per short rest.
  • 6th-8th Level: Bolstering Waters

    • The radius increases to 15 feet, and the healing aura becomes more potent, healing allies for 2d4 once per short rest. If the bearer or an ally is below half health, they gain 2d6 instead.
  • 9th Level+: Tidal Wave of Life

    • The aura extends to 30 feet. Once per short or long rest, allies gain 3d6 healing at the start of the bearer’s turn, or 3d8 if the bearer is below half health. This wave of healing also removes one condition (blindness, deafness, poison, or paralyzed) from affected allies.

3. Prophetic Vision (Limited Use Ability)

  • At 6th Level, the shield grants the bearer brief visions of danger. As a reaction, the bearer can gain advantage on a saving throw or cause an enemy to have disadvantage on an attack roll targeting them or an ally. This ability recharges after a long rest.

  • At 9th Level, the bearer may also foresee an impending disaster and can cast divination (without material components) once per week, as the shield channels the wisdom of the Sentinels and the will of the people. This ability allows them to seek divine guidance before crucial events.

4. Protection from Calamity (Ultimate Power)

  • At 9th Level, the Sentinel Shield radiates a powerful aura of protection once per long rest. For 1 minute, the bearer and allies within 30 feet gain resistance to all damage, and enemies have disadvantage on attacks against those affected. During this time, the shield hums with divine power, its lighthouse motif glowing brilliantly as it shields those nearby from even the most overwhelming threats.

The Enemies Motives: Why They Want the Sentinel Shield

  1. Symbol of Hope—Turned to Despair:
The Sentinel Shield, as a beacon of hope and protection for Seregon, represents the unbreakable spirit of the people. However, in the wrong hands, the shield’s energy could be twisted. The enemies of Seregon, particularly those who thrive on chaos and despair, wish to use the shield to corrupt its power. By reversing the flow of its energies, they can plunge the city into hopelessness, turning the very symbol of resistance into a tool of subjugation. The shield could be used to emit an aura of despair, weakening morale and spreading fear among the citizens, making Seregon ripe for conquest.

  2. Denial of Prophecy:
According to the Prophecy of the Oracle of the Ivory Goddess, the bearer of the Sentinel Shield will lead Seregon in its darkest hour. The villains—likely an evil faction or cult—understand that by possessing the shield, they can not only prevent the fulfillment of this prophecy but also ensure that Seregon will fall in the face of its enemies. Without the shield’s protection, the city will be vulnerable to attack, both from external forces and internal strife.

  3. Harnessing the Shield’s Divine Power for Dark Purposes:
The villains might seek to exploit the shield’s ability to reflect damage and heal allies. If they can corrupt its magic, they could channel the healing aura to serve their own ranks, using the shield to empower their army while leaving Seregon defenseless. The radiant energy of the shield could be warped to drain life instead of healing, turning the battlefield into a death trap for any who oppose them.

  4. Control Over the Myconid Sovereign:
The shield’s connection to the ancient powers of Seregon, including its ties to the myconids, may be critical in controlling these enigmatic creatures. By possessing the Sentinel Shield, the villains could potentially command the myconids, either by completing or perverting the ancient pact. This would give them access to the myconids' spore servants and their powerful ability to control life and death through fungi.

  5. Tool for Conquering More than Seregon:
The shield, in the hands of a master tactician or dark overlord, could serve as the linchpin for larger conquests. It could be used to bolster morale in a tyrant’s army or break the spirit of resistance movements across the land. If the shield is seen as a tool that brings victory, controlling it gives the wielder a strategic advantage not only in Seregon but in any campaign of conquest.

Thus, the Sentinel Shield stands as both a relic of hope and a target for those who wish to bring ruin. Its role in the coming battle for Seregon is central, and whoever controls it holds the fate of the city in their hands.
