Located 20 miles outside the bustling city of Seregon on The One Road, the rubber plantation is a unique farming operation, primarily producing rubber latex for the city's limited technological needs. Though rubber isn't in high demand, it remains essential for crafting waterproof cloaks, bicycle tires, and a variety of gadgets. The plantation, nestled within the jungle, benefits from its relatively secure position—resistant to the zombie incursions and hungry dinosaurs that plague other areas of the region. Thanks to The Telum Druids, the plantation has flourished, incorporating biodiversity to ward off fungal infections that once threatened the rubber trees.
However, a new and terrifying threat has emerged from the jungle—one far more dangerous than a simple fungus.
The Jungle Chimera
Recently, the plantation workers have begun reporting sightings of a monstrous creature—a Jungle Chimera. This creature, an amalgamation of the most dangerous jungle predators, has started to prey upon workers and animals alike. With the head of a panther, the body of a crocodile, and the wings of a giant bat, the chimera moves silently through the jungle, blending into its surroundings before striking with lethal force. Its razor-sharp claws and crushing jaws leave behind mangled remains, and its wings allow it to ambush from above or disappear into the jungle canopy with ease.
The Jungle Chimera appears to be more than just a beast—it seems to have an almost unnatural intelligence, stalking workers and attacking their bicycle caravans as they travel to and from Seregon. The creature is cunning, targeting isolated individuals or small groups, never leaving enough evidence behind to fully prepare for its next attack. It strikes at night, when the jungle is at its darkest, and always escapes before reinforcements can arrive.
Recent Attacks
In the past few weeks, the chimera has claimed multiple victims, dragging away workers and even attacking small herds of domesticated animals that graze near the plantation. Captain Liren Hauk, the foreman in charge of security, has deployed scouts and hunters to track the creature, but it has so far evaded capture. Some believe it’s drawn to the natural vibrations caused by the latex extraction process, while others suspect the magic within the plantation’s protective plants may have attracted the chimera, sparking its territorial rage.
Challenges
Ambushes: The bicycle caravans, typically a quick and safe way to travel, have become a target for the chimera’s attacks. As workers pedal through the jungle, they often feel watched, and some have even vanished without a trace, their abandoned bikes the only sign of the encounter. The three-hour journey to and from the plantation is now fraught with danger, forcing workers to travel in larger groups or risk death.
Disrupted Operations: The plantation’s rubber production has begun to slow down, as more workers are either afraid to venture out or have fallen to the chimera’s attacks. The owners, a group of families from the Old Knot District, have grown concerned and are seeking help, offering a reward for anyone able to eliminate the beast and restore the plantation’s safety.
Mystical Ties: There are rumors that the Jungle Chimera is not a natural beast, but instead the result of a failed magical experiment or the influence of ancient Serpentmen magic lingering in the region. Some believe that the creature is drawn to the latex as part of an unseen curse or artifact buried beneath the plantation. The Telum druids are investigating, fearing that the chimera’s presence could be the harbinger of something much darker and older awakening beneath the plantation.
Next Steps
The Telum Druids are urging caution and have begun casting protective wards to keep the chimera at bay, but they lack the resources to hunt it down themselves. Meanwhile, Captain Liren Hauk has called for experienced adventurers to track the chimera to its lair—likely somewhere deep within the jungle. However, those who take up the challenge must be wary: the Jungle Chimera is intelligent and may not be the only danger lurking in the shadows of the plantation.
With the future of the rubber plantation hanging in the balance, it will take bravery, cunning, and perhaps even magical intervention to eliminate this threat before it destroys the plantation and its workers entirely.
