Red Ziggurat of Bokrug

The Red Ziggurat of Bokrug, in the Valley of Valusia, is an awe-inspiring and ominous structure that looms over the mist-shrouded waters of Lake Valusia. It rises from the murky depths like a scarlet monolith, a beacon of ancient power and a haunting reminder of the once-great civilization of the Thuum’ha, the semi-amphibian Voiceless Ones.

Exterior Description:

The ziggurat itself is constructed from massive blocks of deep crimson stone, which glisten with an unsettling wet sheen, as though perpetually damp from the swampy surroundings. Each of its seven tiers grows progressively smaller as they ascend toward a flat summit, where a blackened altar stands. The stones are etched with intricate, flowing designs of intertwined serpents, amphibians, and alien runes—the ancient script of the Thuum’ha. Moss and creeping vines wrap around the lower tiers of the ziggurat, their sickly green tendrils contrasting sharply with the vivid red of the stone. Strange, flickering lights—perhaps will-o’-wisps or the manifestations of trapped souls—hover near the ziggurat, casting an eerie glow on the surrounding waters.

At the base of the ziggurat, narrow, jagged steps carved into the stone lead upward. On either side of the entrance to the lower level, two enormous stone effigies of Bokrug, the Great Water Lizard, stand as silent sentinels. Their eyes, once glowing with the light of ancient magic, now appear cold and lifeless, waiting for the day when their master awakens.

The Ziggurat’s Mystical Aura:

The air around the ziggurat is thick with an unnatural stillness, disturbed only by the rhythmic lapping of the lake’s water against its base. Yet, those who approach can hear faint whispers carried on the wind—fragments of the Voiceless Ones' lost language, or perhaps the prayers of their descendants. The closer one gets, the more oppressive the atmosphere becomes, as if the ziggurat itself were aware of intruders, exerting a palpable, malevolent presence. Magic-users can sense a pervasive aura of ancient conjuration and divination magics, infused with a deeper, darker power—an unholy conduit to the slumbering Old One, Bokrug.

Interior Description:

The interior of the ziggurat is a labyrinth of narrow corridors and chambers, some flooded with brackish water, others filled with strange, phosphorescent fungi that cast ghostly light over the stone walls. The walls are lined with more ancient carvings, depicting the rise and fall of the Thuum’ha civilization, their reverence of Bokrug, and their brutal massacre by the humans of Seregon. There are also shrines scattered throughout the ziggurat, their offerings long since decayed, save for strange relics that defy the passage of time—glimmering jewels, twisted metal idols, and bones too large to belong to any ordinary lizardfolk.

At the heart of the ziggurat lies the Chamber of the Shining Trapezohedron. This massive, vaulted room is dominated by a raised dais, upon which the ancient, many-faceted gemstone glows with an eerie light. The Shining Trapezohedron, a sinister relic of Bokrug's dark power, pulsates with a heartbeat-like rhythm, casting unsettling shadows that seem to move on their own. Surrounding the chamber are the broken remains of those who sought to control the artifact and failed—mummified corpses, their faces twisted in eternal terror, their souls likely consumed by the malevolent power they sought to wield.

The Legend of the Red Ziggurat:

The Red Ziggurat is said to have been built by the Voiceless Ones as a direct conduit to their god, Bokrug. It was a place of worship, but also of sacrifice. When the Thuum’ha were destroyed, the ziggurat became a tomb, not only for their civilization but for the very spirit of vengeance that now slumbers beneath Lake Valusia. With the Shining Trapezohedron in place, Wrath-Amon seeks to awaken that vengeance, bringing about the prophesied destruction of Seregon and the resurrection of the Voiceless Ones.

Unique Features:

  • The Scarlet Stairs: Each step leading up to the summit is said to sap the strength of those unworthy, a trial of endurance where only the strong-willed can make it to the altar.
  • The Slumbering Curse: Within the chambers of the ziggurat, time itself seems to stretch unnaturally. Resting here, even for a moment, can plunge intruders into strange, restless dreams of drowning or being devoured by serpentine shadows.
  • Echoes of the Voiceless: Throughout the ziggurat, faint echoes of the long-dead Thuum’ha can be heard. They cannot communicate directly, but their cries of agony and revenge reverberate through the halls. The longer one stays inside, the more susceptible they become to hearing these haunting whispers, which may lead to madness.
