Touched by Prophecy: Bearers of Divine Destiny

To be Touched by Prophecy is to walk the delicate line between mortal and divine influence, where your actions have the potential to shape the future of entire worlds. Those chosen by prophecy radiate divine magic—an aura that is unmistakable to powerful entities such as gods, clerics, and even devils or demons. This touch does not come lightly; it places the burden of responsibility and destiny upon your shoulders. For the touched, prophecy is not just a prediction of what might come to pass—it is a call to action, and it assumes those marked by it will strive to make it happen.

Prophecy, however, is not fate. It is divination—a glimpse into possible futures. The person touched by prophecy must take the steps to bring it to fruition. The journey to fulfill a prophecy is fraught with both external and internal dangers, as the weight of destiny can both empower and destroy.

The Divine Aura of Prophecy

Those who are touched by prophecy exude a radiant energy that sets them apart from ordinary mortals. This aura is not visible to the average person, but those with divine or infernal connections—gods, powerful clerics, celestial beings, and even fiends—can sense the presence of prophecy in the air around them. To these beings, the person touched by prophecy is a beacon, their destiny shining like a flare in the darkness, attracting both allies and enemies alike.

The Role of the Touched

  • Agents of Change: The touched are not merely passive vessels; they are agents of change, destined to intervene in pivotal moments of history. They are called to embrace their role, actively shaping the events that lead to the fulfillment of their prophecy.
  • Hazards of Ego: Being touched by prophecy also brings the risk of dangerous ego inflation. There is a temptation to over-identify with the prophecy, to see oneself as not merely a person but as the embodiment of an archetype or idea. This can lead to a dangerous loss of personhood. The prophecy speaks to an idea or destiny, but you are still a person. Those who succumb to the belief that they are above others risk being consumed by the numinosity of an archetype, losing touch with their humanity.

The Duality of Divine Favor and Infernal Opposition

The cosmic balance of prophecy is as intricate as it is dangerous. Good-aligned celestial beings, spiritual entities, and divine forces often rally to support those who are touched by prophecy, acting as protectors or guides to ensure that the prophecy is fulfilled. These "spiritual friends" offer protection, insight, and sometimes direct intervention to counter the forces of evil that seek to thwart the prophecy.

On the other hand, the enemies of prophecy—chiefly fiends, dark cults, and those who wish to alter or end the prophecy—actively work to impede its fulfillment. Prophecies have the potential to upset the balance of power, and thus, those touched by prophecy are often targeted by evil beings who seek to stop them. This opposition can manifest in various ways: attacks on the chosen person, the destruction of prophesized objects, or preventing access to key locations tied to the prophecy.

A Cosmic Cheat Code

Prophecy is often a way for gods to bypass their non-interference agreements with other deities, subtly involving themselves in mortal affairs through their chosen champions. By manipulating prophecy, divine beings can influence events on the mortal plane without direct intervention. This is also why evil entities are so intent on disrupting prophecy—they understand that it is a form of divine manipulation and seek to act as a counterbalance.

Hazards and Temptations

The path of prophecy is not without its personal dangers. Those touched by prophecy are often faced with trials that test not only their strength but their very identity. A prophecy speaks to potential and archetype, not individuality. It is easy for the touched to lose themselves in the grander narrative, becoming more of an idea than a person.

Prophetic Ego Inflation

One of the greatest hazards faced by the touched is ego inflation. When someone believes themselves to be the center of a world-changing event, the line between destiny and hubris becomes thin. The individual may begin to see themselves as more than mortal, embracing the archetype of the chosen one to the point where they lose sight of their own humanity. This is where the real danger lies—when the person begins to identify solely with the prophecy, they become the prophecy, losing the personal qualities that once made them human.

  • "Identification of the ego or consciousness with the numinosity of an archetype": If the touched person over-identifies with the archetypal role they are meant to fulfill, they risk becoming a hollow vessel, losing the very thing that made them worthy of the prophecy in the first place—their humanity.

Attracting Evil

Because prophecy is a beacon of divine interference, it attracts the worst kinds of enemies. Powerful evil beings—including Great Old Ones, devils, demons, and those corrupted by dark powers—seek to prevent the prophecy’s fulfillment. These beings often act through manipulation, tempting the touched to fall into pride, or they outright attempt to destroy the prophesied individual or key artifacts that are crucial to the prophecy’s success.

The Pale Dominion: An Example of Prophetic Failure

The Sovereigns of Seregon is a prime example of what can go wrong when those touched by prophecy fall victim to their ego and dark temptations. Once a group of adventurers chosen by Ambergris the Wizard to be the ~Sentinels of Seregon, they were meant to embody the ideals of prophecy, fighting for justice and balance. However, the members of the Purging Hand were consumed by pride and a sense of superiority, believing that they were above their prophetic future.

Their leader, Diederik van Aldenburg—also known as The Silver Gauntlet—succumbed to fear and arrogance, leading him down a path of racism, supremacy, and eventually betrayal. Diederik believed he knew better than the prophecy and abandoned Ambergris, choosing instead to ally with the sinister Vexilar the Vile. The Purging Hand became a shadowy organization, dedicated to overthrowing the multicultural traditions of Seregon and enforcing human supremacy. Their failure serves as a warning to others touched by prophecy—ego and arrogance are the enemies of destiny.

Tropes in Play

Prophecy is full of contradictions and possibilities, and the following tropes are often associated with those touched by prophecy:

  • Multiple-Choice Future: Prophecies are not set in stone. There are many equally possible outcomes, and those touched by prophecy have the responsibility of choosing the correct path. The fulfillment of a prophecy is shaped by actions, not fate.

  • The Chooser of the One: Prophecy is often guided by a mentor or order, such as the Sentinels of Seregon, who select the next generation of chosen ones. However, they have been known to make mistakes, as evidenced by their selection of The Pale Dominion, whose failure led to disaster.

  • Enemies: The Chosen Wannabe: Sometimes, those not chosen by prophecy become envious of the chosen one’s destiny. The Pale Dominion fell victim to this, believing they deserved more power than prophecy allowed, and ultimately turning against the will of the divine.

Final Thoughts

To be Touched by Prophecy is to walk a dangerous path—one where divine destiny and personal identity are in constant tension. Prophecy may offer guidance, but it is ultimately the actions of those touched by it that determine whether it will come to pass. Those chosen must constantly fight against the temptations of ego, while navigating the threats of those who seek to derail their destiny.

The gods, through prophecy, nudge the world in ways they otherwise cannot, and those touched by prophecy are the instruments of their will. But with such power comes great responsibility, and those who embrace their role must be ever vigilant, not only against the enemies of prophecy, but against the archetype within, that threatens to consume their personhood.
