Scene: A Ruined Palace
The once-grand hall is dimly lit, the morning sun barely piercing the layers of overgrowth that shroud the palace. Ravana the Rakshasa, seated at a crooked table draped in faded crimson cloth, delicately slices a sausage with claws sharper than the knives beside him. His meal is accompanied by a goblet of dark wine and a crumpled copy of Weekly News From Many Places. Across the room, Aarndrak the Black Dragon, a hulking shadow with gleaming scales, watches the rakshasa with thinly veiled disdain.
Ravana (flicking the broadsheet with irritation, his voice dripping with sarcasm):
“The Red Flux orchestrated this horrific transformation, they write. Her influence stretches deeper than they’d realized, they proclaim. Really! As if that pale parasite could ever conceive something as deliciously twisted as the Crown of the Fiendish Wight.”
Aarndrak (curling his tail, voice low and venomous):
“And yet, here you are, gnashing your teeth over a broadsheet. While we still lack access to the orb.”
Ravana (leaning back, gesturing lazily with a sausage-laden fork):
“Oh, Aarndrak, you wound me. Can I not enjoy my breakfast without you prattling on about your shiny bauble?”
Aarndrak (snarling):
“It is our agreement. I help you—you give me the orb. Yet you obsess over accolades instead of overcoming the orb’s defenses. I have known many dragons, Ravana, and your ego rivals theirs. Perhaps you were a wyrm in a past life.”
Ravana (freezing mid-bite, then slamming the goblet down):
“Enough!”
With a snarl, Ravana flips the table, sending the goblet and plate crashing to the ground. He swivels, pinning a trembling servant to the spot with his piercing eyes.
Ravana (roaring):
“I require a distraction! Summon that good-for-nothing Devantaka! And fetch me more entertainers. At once!”
Servant (stammering, wringing his hands):
“B-but my lord, you just had... a batch of entertainers.”
Ravana (baring his teeth):
“Yes, and they are broken now. Useless. I require fresh ones!”
Aarndrak (chuckling darkly, his acidic breath wafting in the air):
“Your appetite will be your undoing, Ravana. You consume everything until there’s nothing left. What will you do when there are no more distractions to feed your gluttony?”
Ravana (turning with a dramatic sweep of his cloak, his voice like poisoned silk):
“And what will you do, great wyrm, when you have no more petty insults to sling? Shouldn’t you be sitting on a hoard somewhere, counting your coins and glaring at trespassers?”
Aarndrak (narrowing his eyes, his talons scraping the stone floor):
“The difference between us, rakshasa, is that my hoard grows. Your schemes rot, just like your victims.”
Ravana (grinning coldly):
“You wound me again, Aarndrak. But no matter. Perhaps I shall even the scales after breakfast... or, what’s left of it.”
The tension thickens as both predator and predator lock eyes, their uneasy alliance strained by insults and ambition. In the shadows, the servant retreats, muttering prayers that his master’s temper remains directed elsewhere—for now.
