A bag of holding was a magical item appearing to be an ordinary bag, but acted as an opening to an extradimensional space. The space inside the bag could hold a huge amount of materials without increasing the weight of the bag. If overloaded or pierced by something sharp, then the bag and its contents would be scattered across the Astral Border plane.
