Ropers were ambush hunters that evolved in the Underdark, and were one of the most dangerous predators in cave systems and ruins. Taking the appearance of stalactites and stalagmites, they could remain inert for long periods of time, only occasionally moving through thousands sticky cilia beneath their base. They would wait for living creatures to draw close, before lashing out with tendrils that extruded from its body. These six tendrils could extend to fifty feet in length and were difficult to escape from, and could be regrown if cut through or broken. Once caught, the roper would pull any creature smaller than it to its fang-filled mouth and consume it.
With skin tougher than stone and possessing powerful low-light vision, ropers were dangerous threats even when detected. Voracious eaters, they often swallowed prey whole, and were equally likely to target small Rats as they were fully-grown Humans. A roper could digest near-anything it ate apart from gemstones, platinum, and magic items. Their digestive juices were valuable, as alchemists often used them as a solvent.
