COS 041 - The Wolf In Sheep's Clothing

Completed

The party decided to stake out Krezk's sheep pen at the Barbu Farmhouse, but thick mist hampered their watch. Hijinks ensued as various half-ideas were implemented: Ghalwin went to hide in the woods, Tobias dug Geronimo into the ground to act as a sort of land mine, and Mormeros beat up a sheep. This attracted the attention of the shepherd Oleg Barbu, and Mormeros used a thaumaturgic warning to scare him away. With their plan ruined, Ghalwin and Mormeros went back to the Krezkov's cabin while, invisibly, Ajuni and Tobias watch Oleg and surmised that he was not the perpetrator.

A simmering lamb stew waited for the heroes with a note thanking them, and the warlock and paladin had a tense conversation. Mormeros expressed his desire to protect Ajuni and Tobias above all else, but Ghalwin believed his thoughtlessness would get them all killed. Momo decided to wake up the sleeping Krezkovs, just to make sure they were not werewolves, and a sleepless Ilya nervously joined them at the table. Ghalwin gave the hungry boy another portion of stew and the two entertained him: based on Ilya's love for horses, Mormeros conjured an illusory Unicorn who the boy named "Beucephalus," and Ghalwin turned a toy sword into a magic weapon, which Ilya used to cut through the family's dining table. Tobias repaired the damage when he turned in for the night.

The next morning, the party earned their keep. Ajuni healed the injured, Tobias fixed broken tools, and Ghalwin chopped wood. Mormeros did not want to actually do manual labour, and tried to con his way out by lying to Dmitri about a massive cache of coal outside the walls. In a circuitous lie, Momo agreed to lead a group to the mythical coal at tomorrow's dawn, but still had to finish this day's hatchet-work. He did nothing until noon, when the farmer Eugenija Fidatovna came looking for him. Two dozen sheep were missing from their pen, and she blamed Mormeros for telling her to keep her suspicions quiet, but also pleaded for him to investigate the problem. Though Momo was not in the mood to play hero, he eventually went to gather the party.

En route to Oleg's, they encountered the shepherd carrying stones toward his homestead. Momo used a fleeing sheep illusion to get Oleg to run in the opposite direction, and the party split as Ghalwin ran after Oleg. The trio quickly broke into his farmhouse and sheep pen, where Tobias found evidence of blood and bits of bone chewed on by sharp teeth; as they rummaged around, they heard a crowd gathering outside. Mormeros announced to the Krezkites that Oleg had told them to move the sheep, sparking chaos and mistrust among the crowd. He then used thaumaturgy to half-threaten them to return to their homes, which partially worked but also spread further discord. Dmitri Krezkov and his wife Anna joined the crowd, and she began to call for Oleg's head, shouting that he had killed the sheep in league with the adventurers.

Meanwhile, Ghalwin learned that shepherd was a simpleton who had been kicked in the head by a horse, but that he was well-meaning. He was solely responsible for the farmhouse with Costel gone, and was not even aware that his sheep had went missing. Oleg was confused when they reached his destination: the baroness Anna had told him to gather rocks all morning to fix his destroyed fence, but there was no trace of damage. As they headed back, Ghalwin heard the sounds of Anna's declarations to the crowd, and turned and ran to the forested area. The sound of his armor attracted attention from inquisitive villagers, and a tense stand-off occurred at the wood's edge. Atop Geronimo, Tobias caught up to Ghalwin, and Ajuni teleported herself and Mormeros next to Tobias.

The larger crowd moved to the treeline, and aided by radiant lights provided by Tobias, an angelic Ajuni calmed the mob. The moment was pierced by a scream, however, and the party again had to spring to action. They rushed south and found Eugenija crawling toward them as blood seeped from a missing leg. Ghalwin healed her and Verity ran the farmer to safety as Tobias encountered Ilya chewing into a corpse. The boy turned tearfully and begged for the heroes to help him, as he could not quell his hunger. His jaw unhinged and three endless mouths with rows of sharp teeth lowered to his sternum; an All-Consuming Hunger had been trapped within the boy in negative space.

With superhuman speed, he lunged to eat Ghalwin, but the paladin avoided the attack. Ilya's horrible bite tore up the earth below him in one snap, and in response, Mormeros turned invisible to hide beside a garden fence. Ilya was able to still smell the tiefling, however, and spat poisonous sheep remains from his seemingly infinite maw. Tobias and Ghalwin fought back with radiant strikes, and he leapt over them onto Ajuni. The sorceress barely had time to summon a shield spell before his teeth latched around her left elbow and ripped her arm clean off, leaving Ajuni with only a stump on her dominant hand.

She blasted back with a fireball and he jumped toward the crowd of onlookers. Ghalwin misty stepped to block him, and Mormeros blanketed them in magical darkness. Now at an advantage with his blind fighting, Ghalwin began smiting, destroying the flesh stretched over wooden pieces that covered the boy's horrible void. Ilya jumped out of the blackness to flee, but as if possessed, his head turned to spit more poison. Mormeros used the opportunity to blast him apart with an incredible ball of fire. As his skeleton crumbled, Ilya asked the warlock about Beucephalus the unicorn. Momo stone-cold checked him with the harsh reality of death, and the boy fell apart in front of him.

Anna ran from the crowd and clutched Ilya, sobbing with pain and guilt. Mormeros intimidated her into revealing everything: she had used Costel's disappearance to manipulate Oleg, sneaking sheep out at night to feed her son's exponentially growing appetite. However, Anna had not expected Ilya to act on his own and eat more than two dozen sheep at once. As the crowd again boiled with rage, the Baroness gave up, knowing that she had decimated her village's food stock. Ghalwin stopped himself from intervening as he had with Baroness Lydia, and instead checked on Eugenija. The farmer was nursing her missing leg, and had a final request for the paladin. If the adventurers did not save Barovia from the mists before midwinter, her village would starve.

The furious mob charged forward and beat Anna to death, and the party got the hell out of Krezk.
