Breakbleak Rock was a narrow, blade-like island rising from Aone Island, its cliffs sheer and dark, capped by wind-scoured stone and perpetual cold. The rock thrust upward at a slanted angle, as if split and forced from the Great Pale Sea, leaving little flat ground beyond the fortress carved into its center. The Aonefort dominated the island’s upper reach, cut directly into the seaward face of the Breakbleak and reinforced with heavy stonework that followed the cliff’s geometry. The rock shielded the fort from most of the harsh winds, though could not protect it from the snow.
The Aonefort's central tower rose starkly above the surrounding structures, visible for miles, while lower wings spread outward in a rigid star. The exposed courtyard lay open to wind and snow, offering little shelter not provided by the Breakbleak itself. Snow and ice gathered in the lee of walls and towers for much of the year, while the surrounding waters churned violently against the base of the cliffs, making approach dangerous even in calm weather.
