Rocking Seal

The Rocking Seal was a narrow sailing vessel commissioned for service in the colder waters of the southern Great Pale Sea. Its most distinctive feature was a reinforced, metal bulbous bow designed to push aside ice floes and crush thin shelves rather than cut cleanly through open water. The ship sat low in the water and was not particularly fast, but its hull was shaped for stability and control amid shifting ice and narrow channels.

While not a true icebreaker, the Rocking Seal was capable of forcing a passage through light ice, allowing it to operate in regions that were inaccessible to most conventional sailing ships. It regularly traversed the southern Brimstone Breath and the Sound of Silveril, weaving through broken ice and seasonal floes that made navigation hazardous. Its limitations were well understood, and captains relied on caution and experience rather than speed or power to complete their routes.

With once-black lateen sails weathered grey through exposure to wintery conditions, the Rocking Seal was owned and operated by the Common League army and was primarily used as a military transport. It carried troops, supplies, and rotating personnel across the Sea of the Maw, most commonly on the route between Igneos Isle and Aone Island. These voyages were vital to maintaining Bleak End, which depended on regular reinforcement and resupply.
