Fungalwood, often called zurkhwood, was a massive species of mushroom found throughout the Deepways and served as the primary substitute for surface timber. The towering fungi grew thick, sturdy stems with a dense, wood-like structure that could be cut, shaped, polished, and stained much like true lumber. Mature fungalwood often reached heights of thirty to forty feet in caverns with sufficient space, and the interior displayed natural grain-like patterns prized by skilled craftsmen.
Fungalwood was one of the most common building materials in the deep realms. Its buoyant stems were used to construct bridges, furniture, containers, rafts, and small boats, useful for the vast underground lakes that could be found across the deepways. The fungus also provided food, as its large edible spores could be harvested in significant quantities and ground into a savory powder used to flavor meals. Though widely relied upon across the realm, rare but deadly allergies to fungalwood were known to occur.
