How Knowledge Works

How Knowledge Works in This Campaign

Magic-users in Kalorand learn early that knowledge has layers, and that not all questions are answered at the same cost.

There is a generally understood path for pursuing difficult or dangerous information. This is not secret lore. It is professional wisdom.

When you ask a question, the world responds based on where you ask it and how far you are willing to go.

The Known Path of Inquiry

Step 1: Do You Know It?

Make a Knowledge roll.

This represents:

  • formal education

  • common magical theory

  • well-known precedents

  • things a competent, educated spellcaster might reasonably know

If you succeed, you know enough to act.
If you fail, the answer is not “no.” It is “not yet.”

Step 2: The Great Library of Kalorand

Consult the Great Library of Kalorand.

Make a Knowledge roll with Advantage.

This reflects:

  • access to sanctioned texts

  • historical records

  • commentaries considered safe enough to shelve

The Library provides correct information, but it is limited to what is preserved, allowed, and indexed.

Failure here usually means:

  • the knowledge exists, but not publicly

  • the question is framed incorrectly

  • or the answer lies outside institutional comfort

Step 3: Vaseth Kal-An

Consult Vaseth Kal-An, for a fee.

Make another Knowledge roll with Advantage.

Vaseth does not know everything. What he does know is:

  • where patterns break

  • where explanations stop working

  • when a question is being asked too safely

He may:

  • answer partially

  • ask you to return later

  • tell you the question is premature

  • or tell you it is dangerous, without explaining why

If Vaseth cannot help, it is because the question is no longer marginal.

In rare cases, Vaseth will give you a referral.

Step 4: Dṛṣṭi the Watchful

In desperate circumstances, Vaseth may refer you to
Dṛṣṭi of the Far Gaze.

Dṛṣṭi possesses vast interplanar knowledge.

The price is not gold.
The price is usually a favor, the nature of which may not be revealed immediately.

Dṛṣṭi answers questions completely, but never harmlessly.

Step 5: Prana the Unseen

There is another option: Prāṇa of the Deep Breath.

Vaseth does not like her. He considers her risky.

Finding her can be a quest, as she is mobile in the Great Salt Fens outside of the city.

Kāla-Mukta knows things that even Dṛṣṭi will not address directly, often because they are:

  • corrosive

  • destabilizing

  • or useful in the wrong way

Her price is always high.
Her answers are always sharp.

The Final Truth

Even Dṛṣṭi and Prana do not know everything.

Sometimes the answer lies:

  • with another faction

  • in a lost place

  • in a broken artifact

  • or in an experience that must be lived rather than explained

At that point, knowledge stops being something you can ask for.

It becomes something you must pursue.

Summary: The Knowledge Flow

You know it

Great Library of Kalorand (Advantage)

Vaseth Kal-An (Advantage, fee, delay possible)

Dṛṣṭi the Watchful (Favor, irreversible insight)
or
Prana the Unseen (Risky, costly, sharp truths)

Someone else entirely

What This Means for Play

  • Failure on a Knowledge roll does not mean the world withholds answers

  • It means the cost of knowing has increased

  • Players choose how far down the chain they are willing to go

  • Every step trades safety for clarity
