The Black Coil
A Sanctioned Necessary Evil
The Black Coil is not a guild, an order, or a church.
It is a containment organization, tolerated because the alternative is worse.
Officially, the Black Coil exists to provide Unnatural Incident Response within the Mandala Kingdom of Reisa. When possession, demonic influence, qliphothic intrusion, or undead escalation exceeds clerical tolerance, the Coil is deployed.
Unofficially, it exists to absorb consequences the Church cannot afford to acknowledge.
Status and Sanction
The Black Coil operates under conditional Church sanction.
That sanction:
-
Can be revoked without public explanation
-
Is reviewed quietly and irregularly
-
Exists only so long as the Coil remains useful and contained
The Coil understands this arrangement and plans accordingly.
Who the Black Coil Recruits
No one joins the Black Coil voluntarily.
All members are survivors of:
-
Failed exorcisms
-
Partial possessions
-
Lingering curses
-
Prolonged exposure to entities that should not be encountered
Orphans are preferred. Fewer legal ties mean fewer complications when something goes wrong.
Those who survive initial exposure often develop:
-
Heightened sensitivity to corruption
-
Resistance to fear and possession
-
An inability to fully reintegrate into ordinary society
The Coil offers structure where none would otherwise exist.
What the Black Coil Does
The Coil does not cleanse the world.
It:
-
Investigates incidents too unstable for clerical rites
-
Contains manifestations before they escalate
-
Destroys entities when containment fails
-
Binds residual corruption for controlled disposal
-
Records outcomes without moral framing
They are not sent to win.
They are sent to prevent spread.
Internal Structure
The Black Coil is deliberately small.
Ranks exist, but informally:
-
Handlers assess threats and authorize deployment
-
Hunters perform containment and elimination
-
Keepers manage records, tonics, and vessels
Authority is earned through survival, not appointment.
Veskan is one of the last figures whose judgment is accepted without challenge.
Training and Doctrine
The Coil does not teach heroism.
Training focuses on:
-
Recognition of escalation thresholds
-
Use of alchemical tonics
-
Withdrawal before collapse
-
Binding and sequestration procedures
-
Living with incomplete victories
Failure is analyzed clinically.
Success is not celebrated.
Alchemy and Tonics
The Coil maintains restricted apothecaries.
Members are trained to:
-
Prepare and consume powerful tonics safely
-
Adjust mixtures based on threat profiles
-
Recognize when a tonic has stopped working
Adventurers who survive repeated exposure are often encouraged to return for recalibration and resupply. This is one of the Coil’s primary points of contact with outsiders.
Dependency is acknowledged, not denied.
Relationship with the Church
The Church relies on the Black Coil and resents that reliance.
The Coil:
-
Submits vessels and reports as required
-
Withholds interpretation where permitted
-
Avoids doctrinal statements entirely
The Church tolerates the Coil because:
-
Public failure would be worse
-
Destruction would leave a vacuum
-
Replacement is not possible
Relationship with Adventurers
The Coil does not recruit adventurers openly.
However, it:
-
Tracks adventuring parties that survive abnormal encounters
-
Offers information when outcomes matter
-
Provides warnings rather than instructions
-
Supplies limited support in exchange for silence or data
Adventurers who ignore follow-up treatment tend to become problems later.
The Thinning
The Black Coil is shrinking.
Reasons include:
-
Increased manifestation near mandala infrastructure
-
Entities adapting to containment rites
-
Fewer survivable thresholds
-
Church delays in authorization
This is not public knowledge.
Within the Coil, it is accepted reality.
Philosophy
The Black Coil does not believe the world can be saved.
It believes:
-
Consequences can be delayed
-
Spread can be limited
-
Some failures can be contained quietly
Containment is not victory.
It is time.
