Vashrata Watch
Royal Monitoring Station, Eastern Reach
Location: Vashrata Thawfen, eastern edge of the kingdom
Map Position: One hex west of the Stone That Refuses Distance, both aligned to the Yellow Ley
Strategic Context: Narrow pass between Lake Vashrata and the eastern mountains
Function: Observe, delay, and record
Secondary Reality: Constructed atop a pre-existing royal tomb complex
Current Status: Subterranean activity increasing
Vashrata Watch is not a noble estate.
It is not a seat of power.
It is a posting.
The kingdom maintains it because someone must.
PURPOSE
Vashrata Watch exists to do three things only:
• Observe the standing stone
• Deter unauthorized approach to the pass
• Report changes without interpretation
The Watch has no mandate to experiment, interfere, or intervene beyond basic defense.
Any escalation requires direct royal instruction, which arrives slowly, if at all.
The castle was designed to hold a line that was never expected to be tested.
STRATEGIC REALITY
The Watch sits on the Yellow Ley, several miles from a powerful warding stone embedded directly in the pass. Together, they form a passive containment system:
• The mountains deny maneuver
• The lake denies mass crossing
• The stone disrupts long-range movement and alignment
• The Watch provides eyes, records, and delay
As long as Lake Vashrata remains liquid, the undead cannot bypass this route in force.
The garrison believes this will always be enough.
They are wrong.
THE POSTING
Lady Katya Zoryana
Lady Katya Zoryana was sent here by royal decree after violating noble covenant law.
Her crime was not treason.
It was commerce.
She ran untaxed silk through lake ports and fen routes, bypassing royal levies with precision and success.
Sentence:
• Title retained
• Lands confiscated
• Posted to Vashrata Watch for an indefinite term
She is competent, resentful, and fully aware this assignment is meant to be survivable but forgettable.
She intends it to be neither.
THE GARRISON
• 18 soldiers
• 2 royal surveyors
• 1 royal factor who audits the post yearly
There is no guaranteed rotation schedule.
Losses are replaced slowly. Sometimes not at all.
THE WATCH ITSELF
A squat stone keep atop a low, unnatural hill rising from the fen.
• Thick walls
• Narrow towers
• Defensive proportions
• No ornamentation
Inside, the stone is bare and cold.
Over it all hangs silk.
Silk runners on stairs.
Silk wall hangings.
Silk canopies in chambers.
It is conspicuous, excessive, and deliberate.
Lady Katya brought it with her.
No one comments on it.
VISITORS
Visitors are discouraged. Most are refused.
Exceptions are made for:
• Royal agents
• Authorized surveyors
• Adventurers investigating disturbances beneath the Watch
Lady Katya does not advertise the problem.
She does not deny it either.
WHAT LIES BELOW
The Tomb of the Twice-Crowned King
Long before Vashrata Watch, this hill was chosen as a place of royal exile.
A king and queen, accused of embracing forbidden Old Way beliefs, were sent here to disappear quietly. The crown permitted the king access to the treasury to construct a tomb beneath the hill.
He spent nearly everything.
The tomb is vast, multi-leveled, and excessive. It was meant as a final statement and a permanent silence.
It worked.
Until recently.
CURRENT DISTURBANCES
Over the past months:
• Stone vibrations felt at night
• Cold drafts rising through sealed masonry
• Silk banners shifting without wind
• One soldier missing during inspection of a collapsed stair
The proximity of the standing stone has reawakened dormant systems within the tomb.
Mechanisms hum.
Wards degrade.
Movements occur without agency.
These are not hauntings.
They are activations.
WHY ADVENTURERS ARE WELCOME
Lady Katya cannot:
• Abandon her post
• Request reinforcements without scrutiny
• Acknowledge the tomb officially
Adventurers provide:
• A solution without paperwork
• Plausible deniability
• Distance from royal blame
She will grant:
• Access below the Watch
• Known maps of upper tomb levels
• Supplies and temporary authority
All discoveries are to be reported.
What is actually reported is another matter.
USING TOMB OF THE TWICE-CROWNED KING
Run the adventure largely as written, with the following adjustments:
• The tomb lies directly beneath Vashrata Watch
• Royal iconography replaces cult symbolism
• Magical effects are ley resonance, not divine punishment
• Guardians are loyal retainers, constructs, and sealed mechanisms
The tomb is not cursed.
It is unfinished.
ROLE IN THE CAMPAIGN
Vashrata Watch serves as:
• A permanent eastern bastion
• A monitoring point for ley and ice conditions
• A hostile but usable base of operations
• A place where royal authority thins and old systems persist
It will not save the kingdom.
It will record how the kingdom fails.
