🪶 Custom Ability: Scroll Scribing (Initiate's Path)

📜 Overview

At 3rd level, a Magic-User, Elf, or Cleric may choose to pursue the Initiate’s Path of Scrollcrafting—a disciplined rite requiring a place of study or worship and specialized tools.

🏛️ Scroll Shrine / Arcane Sanctum (Mini Stronghold)

Before any scrolls may be scribed, the character must construct or consecrate a dedicated space for the work. This space becomes their first personal sanctum, a symbolic precursor to the stronghold gained at 9th level.

Requirements:

• Location: Permanent or semi-permanent location (e.g. temple alcove, ruined tower, wilderness chapel)

• Construction Time: 2 weeks

• Total Cost: 1,000 gp (see offset rule below)

  • This includes structural materials, holy/symbolic art, insulation for scroll storage, and basic protections (e.g., glyphs, locks).

• Offset Rule: When the character reaches 9th level and constructs their true stronghold, this initial 1,000 gp is deducted from the total stronghold cost if the structure is expanded or consecrated into it.

✒️ Calligraphy Tools and Scribing Materials

The character must also procure specialized tools:

Total Initial Investment (Materials & Tools): 375 gp
(Ongoing scroll scribing still requires ink and parchment for each scroll.)

⏳ Scribing Procedure

• Minimum Level: 3rd

• Time Required: 1 week per spell level

• Cost per Spell Level: 500 gp 

• Scroll Limitations:

  • Can only scribe spells the character can currently cast.

  • Scrolls may only contain one spell each.

  • Divine casters may only scribe cleric spells; arcane casters, arcane spells from their list.

• Failure Chance: 10% per spell level (only 5% per spell level if scribed in your sanctum, 0% chance at 9th level+)

  • Failure results in wasted time and materials,

• Scroll Use: Scrolls may be used only by a caster of the same class or tradition unless read magic or special rituals are used.

🏗️ Expansion into Stronghold (9th Level)

When the character reaches 9th level and becomes eligible to build a full stronghold or temple:

• If they expand upon their initial shrine/sanctum, the 1,000 gp cost is fully deducted from the stronghold cost.

• The shrine may be built upon, converted into a central tower, inner sanctum, or reliquary.

• This encourages early investment and narrative continuity in their magical legacy.

• Brings scroll scribing into earlier gameplay in a flavorful, earned way.
