Heart's Fire

This sword is Grandpa Kathos’ most prized possession; a magic sword that he called “Heart’s Fire”. More than once he has regaled his grandchildren with the tale of how he acquired this particular sword. It was the mid-2900’s and a terrible dragon named Erebus was wreaking havoc on the outskirt towns of Déntros. It was common knowledge that the dragon lived in Mount Fovios, a towering volcano in The Ashlands. In 2402, Erebus had caused thousands of deaths culminating in a fight remembered as the Unknown. After that fight, Erebus lay dormant in his volcano lair for centuries, and the world stopped worrying about the threat. Until 2940 when he went on a sudden rampage. Before The Simera Guild stepped in to put a stop to him, his death toll was at more than 500. Grandpa Kathos was 24 at the time and was sent as part of an elite team of 20 to travel to Mount Fovios and slay the dragon in its lair. The snuck in while Erebus was asleep, but even with the advantage of surprise the fight was not easy. At this point, Erebus was a full adult, and a grueling fight took place that went on for seven hours before finally the beast was slain. Twenty highly trained warriors entered the lair and only four walked out, but they walked out victorious.

Grandpa Kathos loves to talk about the magnificence of Erebus’ hoard. Mountains of golds taller than The Kosmouno Mountain Range (perhaps an exaggeration), gems the size of his head, and a collection of weapons larger than any army in the world could possess. Although they could not take all of it with them, the group each chose one item (and a healthy amount of gold) to reward themselves with for their efforts. Grandpa Kathos found Heart’s Fire buried under a pile of gold. Something about it stood out to him and he knew that of all the treasures, this was the one that should belong to him. It was cracked when he found it, but he liked it all the more for that fact. He thought it gave the sword character, like a battle wound. It was a sign of the battle they all had to endure.

When Tyr turned eighteen, Grandpa Kathos gifted Heart’s Fire to him, in the hopes that he could use it in his own battles someday. He’s very proud of his grandson following his dreams to join the Simera guild. He hopes that one day, Tyr can use it to save people from great threats—the same way that he did.
