Emberthorn Pithfruit

Found only in volcanic caves or deep magma-choked crevices of the Underdark, the Emberthorn Pithfruit is a jagged, thorn-lined fruit with bark-like skin and glowing orange flesh. When cracked open, it steams violently, releasing a spicy, earthen aroma.

Favored by rock gnomes and deep-dwelling dwarves, the fruit is often eaten raw during rites of courage or desperation. Aboveground, it's prized by alchemists who use it to craft potent elixirs, and by adventurers who crave its temporary rush of power.

Despite its potency, the fruit is dangerous—it burns as it heals, and inspires as it warps.

Properties:

Consumable Effect (Raw):

As an action, you may consume the Emberthorn Pithfruit. When you do:

  • You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls for 1 minute (no concentration required), as adrenaline and pain sharpen your instincts.
  • You have disadvantage on Insight checks during this time, due to overstimulation and mental agitation.
  • You must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, or take 2 fire damage as the molten interior scalds your mouth.

Alchemy Use:

If refined over 1 hour using alchemist’s supplies, the fruit can be made into a Bloodfire Tonic:

  • Bloodfire Tonic (Consumable): Grants resistance to fire damage for 10 minutes, but the user suffers hallucinations (roll on the Short-Term Madness table in the DMG).
