Physical Description

Turnagain Arm is where Alaska reminds humans that they are small and temporary. The arm possesses the second-highest tides in the world—water levels can change by forty feet in six hours, creating bore tides that surge up the inlet like ocean tsunamis. The Seward Highway clings to the mountainside, offering views of deadly beauty. Beluga whales surface in the gray water. Dall sheep pick their way across cliffs that would kill a human climber.This is liminal space in the truest sense: twice daily, the flats transition from sea floor to open water and back again. The tide does not care about your schedule. The tide does not care if you survive. Experienced Alaskans have died here, trapped in glacial silt that acts like quicksand, drowned by water that moves faster than a human can run.

Spiritual Landscape

The Shadow of Turnagain Arm is dominated by tide spirits of immense power and alien perspective. They think in cycles—six-hour rhythms, lunar months, yearly patterns, century-long progressions. Human concepts like "urgency" or "individual importance" are meaningless to them. The Gauntlet is thin here (rating 2), worn smooth by the constant transition between states.Powerful loci manifest at Beluga Point (transition and liminality), Bird Creek (persistence against adversity), and Portage (loss and memory—the town was destroyed in 1964 and never rebuilt). The spirits here remember when this inlet was ice, when the ice melted, when the first humans arrived, and when the first werewolves claimed territories. They will remember when all of that ends.This is Tunraq territory. The ancient beings do not dwell here physically, but their presence permeates everything. Those who spend time in Turnagain Arm feel watched by something vast and patient.

NPC Connection

Tom Begich is Athabascan, and his family has lived in Alaska for thousands of years. Hunter in Darkness. Elodoth. The only living Forsaken who can speak the Tunraq languages—and he learned them from his grandmother, who learned them from hers, a chain of knowledge stretching back to before the Sundering.Tom claimed Turnagain Arm because it claimed him. He understands tidal time, cyclical time, the kind of patience that outlasts mountains. He runs a small guiding service, taking tourists to see bore tides and belugas, using the cover to maintain his real work: keeping the boundary between Anchorage and the deep wilderness intact.Tom will not help the Forsaken until they prove worthy. This is not negotiable. He watched the Protectorate kill every Pure in Alaska, including good people who were simply born on the wrong side. He needs to know the Forsaken understand what they've inherited before he teaches them how to maintain it.
