Yuka Begich

Veterinarian
The land has been talking longer than any of us have been listening. I just never learned to tune it out.

Yuka is a Hän Gwich'in woman in her early thirties, lean and unhurried in the way of someone who spends more time outdoors than in. She keeps her black hair pulled back practically, wears clothes that can survive a muddy kennel or a boreal forest without complaint, and has the kind of stillness that makes animals calm down and people vaguely uncertain about what she's already noticed about them.

She leads with warmth and competence — she's the person who crouches down to meet an injured animal at eye level before she does anything else, who remembers the names of her clients' pets years later, who shows up when someone needs help without making a production of it. Her compassion is real and runs deep.

The wrath is real too. It doesn't show often, but it's there under the surface — a slow burn that comes from years of being trusted with hard things and kept out of harder conversations. She doesn't raise her voice. She gets very quiet, very precise, and she doesn't forget. Cross her once and she'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Cross her twice and she'll be professionally courteous to you for the rest of your life while quietly never trusting you again.

She's observant to an almost uncanny degree — part training, part a childhood spent learning to read what the world around her was trying to say. She doesn't fill silence unnecessarily. She asks good questions and actually listens to the answers. She is, as her grandmother told her she would be, a listener — and she hears more than most people realize.

Role Playing Hooks

Dog Sled Racer:

  • Yuka breeds, raises, and races sled dogs. Perhaps you're interested in learning more or you'd like to go out on a sled ride, or you need to get somewhere mid-winter and the roads are closed but you can't wait.

The Wildling:

  • An animal has been acting as a messenger and nobody can figure out what it's saying. Yuka can understand animals — perhaps you heard about that, or you find her following the same trail. She's not the flashiest supernatural contact, but she's the one who notices things before they become emergencies.

Chida, the Familiar

Yuka's often seen with a raven nearby. Sometimes she sits outside and croaks out greetings to the people coming out or going in other times she sitting on Yuka's shoulder and commenting on her conversation. The raven doesn't talk like she's not anything but a raven, but sometimes the way it acts or what it says is just a little 'less' or 'too much' raven, giving folks a bit of a pause. For those that can see spirits, it's easy to tell why. Yuka's familiar is a raven spirit, but not a particularly powerful one. She's just a little Rank 1 corvid spirit.

For those that know Dena'ina, they'd also recognize Chida as a word for 'grandmother'.

Either way, Chida is Yuka's oft companion, mentor, teacher, and annoyance. If you see her flying high somewhere in the sky, chances are Yuka's somewhere nearby tracking something.

K’etniyi - the Fox Friend

Yuka has told some of her friends that her raven, Chida, made a friend she calls 'K'etniyi'. Sometimes people might see the familiar with a fox rather than with Yuka.
