Joy Hale

Hi! I'm Joy!

Description & Personality

a1c0eb89-4137-467c-993f-3b311c8d2ccd.jpgJoy Marguerite Hale has the particular quality of presence that makes a room rearrange itself around her without anyone quite noticing it happened. She is blonde, slight, and almost always smiling — a smile that is warm enough to be genuine and steady enough to be something else entirely. She dresses simply. She remembers your name the first time she hears it. People who meet her once tend to find reasons to come back.

She arrived in Anchorage recently and built The Open Table from the ground up: a mutual aid network operating out of Mountain View, running community meals, crisis support, and a rotating host model that has quietly become one of the more effective grassroots operations in the city. To the world she is a community organizer with a popular podcast and an uncanny gift for being in the right place at the right time. To a smaller circle she is something considerably more specific.

Joy is a true believer... not in the way of someone who has decided to believe, but in the way of someone who was shown something and has not been able to unsee it. She carries infernal blood seven generations back and has chosen to read that inheritance not as a curse but as a commission. She is a member of the Lucifuge, faction Reconciliation, and she hunts the things that threaten her community with the focused calm of someone who is convinced the outcome has already been decided.

Personality

Joy runs warm. She leads with generosity, with hospitality, with the particular gift of making whoever she is talking to feel like the most important person ina1c0eba8-5acf-44ed-a491-69296a6d7a4c.gif the room. She does not raise her voice. She does not threaten. When she needs something from someone she asks for it like it's already been decided between them and they simply haven't confirmed it yet. She is the kind of person who wins arguments by being the last one still smiling.

The Familiar

Pip takes the form of a medium-sized dog of indeterminate breed — dark-coated in a way the light seems uncertain about, somewhere between black and the specific dark of something that doesn't quite want to be seen. Its proportions are correct for a dog. Its bearing is not. It sits with the particular stillness of something that is listening to frequencies no one else in the room can hear, and it watches people the way an intelligence surveys new territory — patient, thorough, and entirely without the social warmth that ten thousand years of domestication has bred into actual dogs.

Its eyes are amber. They catch the light wrong.

Pip was named before it arrived. It has opinions about this that it keeps to itself, which is the only kind of opinion a bound demon gets to have.

Role Playing Hooks

A Reader

Tarot, palm, sometimes just a long conversation over coffee that ends somewhere neither party expected. She frames it as intuition. People who have sat across from her tend to use the words unsettling and accurate in the same breath, often without meaning to connect them. It is a low-stakes point of first contact that has a way of becoming something else.

Social Justice Demonologist
Joy's investment in the Open Table is not a cover story. She genuinely believes in what she is building — the meals, the network, the people who fall through every other crack in this city. She has been the person that nobody came for, and she has not forgotten what that felt like. The fact that she is also a skilled demonologist operating a functional summoning circle in the back room of a community center is not, in her view, a contradiction. The downtrodden and forgotten of the world deserve someone willing to use every available tool on their behalf. Joy has decided to be that person. The tools are simply more varied than most people's.

The Table is Always open:

Joy is always quietly recruiting — not overtly, and not for anything she would name right away, but she has a specific sense for people who have seen things they can't explain and kept showing up anyway. If your character has that quality, she will find a reason to keep crossing their path. The Table has tiers. Not everyone knows what's at the center.
