Shipwreck on Ice

Completed
Sidequest

While the Chardalyn Syndicate has been tightly-secured and somewhat inhospitable to folks not doing authorized business within its towns, Aelar has employed his skills in disguises and stealth to spy upon the conversations in taverns in Targos and Bremen.  One story he's picked up from a whale oil merchant tells of a "pirate ship" stuck in the ice that expanded (rapidly due to the Frostmaiden?) on the coast of the Sea of Moving Ice. Some in Bremen were speculating it might hold treasure (or at least rum!) and thought to investigate.

Relatedly, Alyks Askaria had mentioned one of the revelations of the Deva of Ilmater in the Saint Greycastle Hospital was her friend Nass Lantomir had been caught, and perhaps perished, in a sudden ice storm on a ship she had hoped would take her to another of the wizard student-friends, Maccath the Crimson. Perhaps this is that ship?

Nass had also been mentioned by Vellynne Harpell, who said she stole from her what she called the "Mormesk Orb" - an item with a spirit trapped within, and important because, "Most of what I learned about the ancient magics of The Netheril at work here in the north were following its knowledge and memories."

Result

The ship, "The Dark Duchess" is found ice-bound where it would have been off-shore, but for the freezing of the shoreline of the Sea of Moving Ice.  It appears the cause of the wreck, before it being locked in the ice, was an attack by the White Wyrm Arveiaturace, who now uses the ship's hull as one of her treasure caches. A few Icewind Kobolds care for the place, worshipping her.

The ship had sailed out of Luskan with Nass aboard, promising her divination to aid in navigating the treacherous Sea of Moving Ice for Captain Rudolph Bluemoon, of the High Captains' Ship Suljack. Nass had begun a romance with the captain's son, Billy, and the two caught up the whole crew's aspirations with Nass' ambitions. Billy and Nass went inland to Ten Towns, successfully stealing the Mormesk orb from Dzaan. But before able to depart, the ship was caught by the dragon and all perished either in the attack or froze to death after escaping.

Nass, now a ghost, speaking through her familiar (somehow persisting after the passing of the wizard) was able to convey messages of several other spirits in the process of the exploration of the ship.
