Bone Knights are elite Karrnathi soldiers, living knights that command and fight alongside the undead legions of Karrnath. During the Last War, Bone Knights were some of Karrnath's most valuable military assets, each commanding a legion of undead, striking terror into the hearts of Karrnath's foes. Now that the war is over, most bone knights continue to serve as elite agents who travel around Khorvaire and do the bidding of King Kaius ir'Wynarn III.

Bone Knights are both warriors and necromancers, potent with both spell and blade. They use their mastery of the art of necromancy to fashion themselves equipment out of bone, magically reinforcing their armour. Each bone knight could also summon a skeletal steed to carry them in battle, a sight that Karrnath's enemies would come to dread.

Most bone knights were trained at either Atur Academy or Rekkenmark Academy, and belonged to one of a few knighthood orders. Many belonged to the Order of the Emerald Claw, and following the order to disband, refused and fled Karrnath, maintaining their association with the order. Those that stood down as ordered were distributed amongst the other knighthood orders, though they are kept closely monitored. Altogether, there are only a hundred or so bone knights left, and most of them now answer to Knight-Marshal Prothan ir'Vemel, who leads the Order of the Onyx Skull.

The bone knights are legendary throughout Khorvaire for their service to Karrnath, and whilst they were terrifying to their enemies, they are well loved by the Karrnathi people they protected. The Knights Templar of Thrane disapprove of the bone knights and their methods, but they still respect them and their capabilities.
