If your opponent is shielded and you succeed in an attack against them, you may choose to have your effect die bypass their shield and become a physical complication. Since this does not hit the enemy shield, their shield remains unaffected. No elemental reactions can occur besides those triggerable by physical attacks (like shatter).
This option is good for last hits or to wear enemies down with smaller complications for your allies to take advantage of.
