Arya shifted back to her normal form, the smoke and fire not fazing her at all. She lunged forward and healed Idris who, panicked at being on fire, attempted to jump out of the tower. Thinking quickly Arya grabbed him midair with a magical vine and tugged him back into the tower. Before the somewhat feral paladin could act she cast an illusion over the room, making it seem like the fire was gone. It seemed to work as Idris calmed down, giving enough time to Arya to open the door and allow Pine in. The cleric jammed the door so it would not close behind him and then quickly entered, healing Idris further and then guiding him out slowly.
Hearing the commotion the stuck Siax and Effie would head down and join them, with all the members making their way outside the tower. To their dismay (and some incredulous laughter) they realized that Idris, while seemingly fine was feebleminded. His eyes betrayed the look of one concussed and he did not seem to be able to speak or reason. Thankfully he seemed happy to follow instructions from his fellow party members.
Gallio Elibro joined the party enquiring about what happened, shock crossing his face when he heard that a trap had triggered despite the runic solutions he had created. Confronted by Siax with suspicion the construct seemed genuinely shocked. After examining Idris for a bit he declared that he needed to investigate the trapped room. However a still mistrusting Siax. blocked him, saying he would not go anywhere without him. Here the construct would snap, angrily telling off the ranger that he could either be angry for his own sake or let him help Idris. There was tension between the two still but the ranger let the mage proceed.
Putting out the fire with a wind spell, the mage discovered that all the books in the chamber had become blank, an effect that hadn't spread to writings outside the chamber. He did not seem to know what had happened but urged the party to keep going up the tower as any clues to what has happened would likely lie there. There was some hesitation from the party, discussing if perhaps it would be best to return to the town but in the end they headed upstairs trying to find the main office of the mage Thalivar. Gallio Elibro asked them to avoid using the runes and instead sneak around the statues. At this point Siax revealed the chunk of masonry he had found, clearly a part of this tower and he asked Gallio Elibro to cast a spell that would enable him to read it as it would likely contain further clues.
Heading up the party was confronted by another one of those giant statues but this one having been cleaved in half. Examining the cut Siax was able to determine that this was likely made by a Moonblade similar to the one he carried. The rest of the floor seemed quite collapsed, rubble chocking some of the passageways from floor to ceiling. Abandoned shovels next to the rubble showed what the Guards the party had encountered had been busy doing. Pine examined the rubble and determined it would take a few days labor to clear it all. However as part of his investigation he found a hole in the wall where once stood a mural. It seemed likely the chunk of stone Siax had found was from this place.
Meanwhile Arya was examining the field of magic that was stopping them from entering the fourth floor. It seemed to be a recent thing considering the scaffolding extended inside of it, the soldiers and Gallio clearly having made their way to the fourth floor at some point. Whatever had happened it seemed to have made them forget this had occurred. Finally, Arya summoned her magical might and attempted to dispel the effect. She was unable to but realized that part of the weaving of this spell was distinctly feylike.
Before she cold consider this knowledge the party was joined by a sixth presence - a translucent figure, eyes burning and a wild bushy beard framing the slim elven face. It seemed the mage Thalivar had joined them. He yelled out words in the ancient elven language the party had heard previously, directed towards Siax. While seemingly a ghost of some sorts Pine was not able to sense any undeath from it. Before the party could attempt to speak to the creature it was attacked by Idris, still in a feral state, charging him. A thrown dagger by Effie followed close behind but both passed through the apparition. The mage would make some gestures similar to the runes below. The tower started rumbling again and strange grinding noises would come from above. Something happened and the tower started powering down, the light in the room dimming and strange whispers filling the air. The mage would say something final and would vanish from view.
Suddenly thumps could be heard from upstairs, seemingly heavy footsteps. They seemed to be heading north until they stopped entirely when the noise was above where Siax stood.
The Leilon...Some? started preparing themselves for combat, Arya turning invisible, Effie hiding, Siax preparing his and Idris's weapons, Pine bringing forward his aura of death and Idris screaming at the whispers.
And yet they were still caught by surprise when numerous creatures, looking like a a plucked chicken crossed with a lamprey streamed in from all the openings in the floor.
Arya knew these creatures, called the Wretched, spawned from feelings of self-loathing and inadequacy in the shadowed planes. She knew that they would try to attach themselves and devour their victims lifeforce. A door slammed open and five of them attacked Effie, swarming her and landing a few blows. One attached itself n her leg which instantly turned pale.
The party fought back against these creatures who did not seem to care if they were walking into danger. They were dangerous but they seemed to fall easily. However, it was then the wailing started. A horrible cry that blurred the vision and made sounds distorted. The creature that made them dropped from the level above, six horrific spiked arms arranged around a somewhat humanoid figure. It seemed to be in pain but then in a flash it assaulted Siax attempting to impale him with it's spikes.
The combat that followed was desperate with the wretched slowly being slain by blade and spell, with many of them falling to Pine's aura. Idris who was still feral killed a few with his bare hands, the sight of Eefendruphunka the sword being on fire scaring him too much to use.
Finally Pine realized that thus creature was not of this plane and was able to banish it completely. Arya realized this was also a Sorrowsworn this one called The Lost, spawned from fear and anxiety.
With that distressing encounter over the party redoubled their efforts to get into the main office chambers, separating and looking around. Incredibly it was Idris who figured out a way in, finding a glowing table that seemed to change color when the blade that housed Eefendruphunka touched it. At first scared, Idris realized this made the table warmer so he lay down on it activating the portal's enchantment and teleporting him into the main office of Thalivar. Having no interest in anything here Idris sat down on the glowing portal again, reappearing in the previous room.
Realizing what had happened the rest of the party attempted to recreate it, with the first being Effie. Making her way into the office she found a large journal upon the desk that dominated this chamber. The journal was written in the ancient elven she could not read but her expertise in forging documents allowed her to tell that while the book and most entries were ancient - the most recent ones seemed to be just from a few days ago, written in the same handwriting and with the same purple ink.
Looking around further Effie found a hidden mechanism which unlocked a small hidden chamber. Inside there was a chest, ornate and decorated it. An experienced rogue she quickly cracked it open to be confronted by something many adventurers never get to see - treasure. She discovered two wands, a book, a rind, a large jewel, a golden gilded acorn among quantities of gold, silver and diamond dust. She took everything back to the others but not before she slipped the ring she had found into her pocket.
Siax continued experimenting with the portal, seeing that his bow caused it to shine a dull gold and the moonblade making it shine brightly white. The party then had the idea to try and have multiple people go through together, Effie, Arya and Siax attempting to go through when it was red. However, something occurred and while Effie and Siax found themselves in the office again, Arya was nowhere to be seen.
Arya woke up in the fourth floor. She struggled to move, realizing she was in a cage made by cold iron, something specifically known to be able to stop Fey creatures from teleporting.
Most of this floor was missing but she could see a giant skeleton of a creature, a spectral blade coming out of it's head. The body of a humanoid lay in it's jaws. Before she could call out the apparition of Thalivar showed up, hate in it's eyes. It spoke in that ancient elven and suddenly vanished. Arya fell to the floor and when her eyes opened it was Thalivar who looked out from them. It was time to destroy the rest of the intruders.
A truly mind bending tower, a far cry from the run of the mill abandoned mage house! And what happens now? The Leilon...Some? are battered and bruised by their combat with the Sorrowsworn, one of them reduced to less than animal intelligence, the other taken over completely and to be used as a weapon... I hate to say this dear reader, but my prospects for long term employment are not looking too good.
