Exhausted and beaten by the
Mere Of Dead Men The Leilon...Some? wasted no time closing in to the Tower of Storms, where the Dreadnought Ularan Mortus had created had been beached and captured by the Cult of Talos.
Using the main road the party made quick time, cutting directly towards the
cliffside where the tower stood. Siax, Pine and Idris remembered the way and
were able to get everyone there with no issues. Approaching, they observed a
bolt of lighting striking a point near the lighthouse, one every minute.
Arya,
knowledgeable in using the forces of nature as a weapon recognized it as a
spell, possibly being used to break Emberlost, the bound spirit that powered the Dreadnought.
Betting that the
ship could withstand for some more time the party hid and rested for an hour,
hoping to recover before what was sure to be a dangerous encounter. While they
did so Siax took a look down the cliff and saw the Dreadnought. It was quite the sight,
seemingly made from metal and bones with a giant’s skeleton clutching a
halberd lashed to its bow. On the ship lay a large shape, covered under a tarp that was further bound by chains. On it was a spike that had been used to lead the lighting there. It seemed that whatever lay underneath it was connected to Emberlost.
He saw several cultist busy repairing the ship and
one that was clearly controlling the lighting strikes. Surprisingly a gnome
appeared from the decks below and slapped the lighting caster, who was at
first shocked. The casting then stopped and the gnome headed downstairs again.
Meanwhile Pine attempted to commune with The Dead Three. So far from the Mere Of Dead Men he was able to, their whispers filling his mind. They told him that the spirit would attempt to kill them if it was not sated and perhaps some sort of way could be found within it's decks. Bhaal suggested that Pine release the spirit anyway as the ensuing battle would be spectacular. With their rest complete the party planned their approach. They would split up in three groups and approach at the same time, hoping to surround and confound the cultists.
Arya
First
Arya turned into a bat and flew off in the night. She was able to scout the
ship, seeing it had multiple holes in it's hull, including one on the
bottom, where water had flooded in. Deciding to risk it she flew into the
hole but her bat form was destroyed by a hungry eel. The bottom deck was
crawling with them, the creatures barely fitting in here.
Before Arya could flee something spoke, a crooning voice talking about mother. Once a denizen of the feywild, the creature before here had been somehow corrupted by her imprisonment in the ship, the long chains gripping her hands attached firmly on the ships hull. Thinking quickly Arya convinced her that she had been sent from Selephra to rescue her. This seemed to excite the creature who promised that any cultists thrown to the sea would be devoured by her eels.
Arya then climbed on the side of the boat stealthily. She was almost seen but a massive noise from the north that sounded like Idris being hit by a ballista, ensured she was not heard. She hid, waiting for the others to strike.
Siax
Siax left the others and attempted to cross the stone bridge to get to the
broken lighthouse. He hopped to set a vantage point up there that would
allow him to fire and support his allies. Timing his approach with the waves
he was still almost spotted from the ship, if not a massive noise from the north that sounded like Idris being hit by a
ballista, eventually getting to the door of the building.
The door was open and he pushed it, wincing at the squeak from the
hinges. His acute senses caught the snores from someone, the
interrupted breathing showing that whoever it was would wake soon. Without
hesitation the young ranger moved forward quietly, his senses on overdrive.
Finding an armored knight bearing the symbols of Talos, he took out a
dagger and plunged it in the mans throat. The knight, amazingly, survived
and attempted to cast a spell but Siax kicked him back and finished him with
his shortsword. He caught the body before it fell and put it gently beside
him.
Cautiously he made his way up the lighthouse, making sure no
other cultists remained in the building. He left his equipment nearby and
readied his bow, waiting for the signal from Effie which was apparently her doing the "so-so" gesture.
Idris, Pine & Effie, aka team stealth
Hoping that Effie's magic would allow the normally loud members of the group to not be seen, the trio scaled down the cliffside and attempted to approach the ship from the beach. Alas, Idris slid, his armor making a grinding noise from scrapping on the rock, alerting the cultists. They were still able to run behind cover before they were seen, the invisibility wrapped around the two helping them run from rock to rock.
Alas, not only was this approach heavily trapped with some sort of poison gas, the cultists were now aware of their presence and were shooting at them with their ballistas. Stuck behind the rocks, all seemed lost before Effie, stepped out from cover and raised her hands. A bolt narrowly missed her face and somehow she did not flee but raise her voice. Dressed as a cultists she was able to convince the other cultists that she was one of them and had simply approached the wrong way. She was berated, with one cultist offering to kill her but with some quick talking she was able to make the captain let her board. This allowed the still invisible two to slowly approach.
Still, the cultists were on high alert and despite Effie's efforts they were about to spot the others. It was then that Arya called the lighting that had been strikung the ship and bound it to her, striking one of the cultists and killing him immediately. The cultist priest saw what this was and shouted over the calls of "Talos, Talos" the others had started, telling them they were under attack!
FIGHT!
Armed with ballistas, mangonels and with several powerful spellcasters the cultists were a force to be reckoneed with. However, the plan of The Leilon...Some? was successful and with them at such close quarters they were able to strike before the cultists could get organized. Siax loosed arrow after arrow, narrowly avoiding the mangonel's attacks. The lighthouse almost crumbled under that assault but soon the crews of the siege weapons were silenced.Idris stayed on the beach, firing beams of pure light at the various weapon crews while Pine climbed up to the deck. He was able to kill one of the cultist magicians before a lucky ballista hit sent him sprawling back down. Arya was able to fight the cultist priest as he attempted to wrest control of the storm from her. With his death her storm grew in power, lighting raining down on the remaining cultists.
Effie ad pretended to be one of them, making her able to swiftly kill an unsuspecting cultist priest who was trying to cajole Emberlost in helping them. She then dashed downstairs, the captain in pursuit but before they could go far Gol Badwind left his cabin and threw a device at them. The device killed the captain instantly and viciously wounded Effie.
Meanwhile all the remaining cultists had been slain but in the confusion the gnome flew out into the sky and cast a spell. The clouds above moved and amazingly formed words, big enough to be seen from miles away.
Fheralai Stormsworn, the five fools are attacking me. Help?
The travails and labors never cease. The Leilon...Some? have
left to the south, to find our missing guards. It is still early but it
seems they are genuinely caring people, despite first appearances. The help
they have given to this small town has been beyond what most would have
done. My senses are still wary but I will endeavor to hep them in any way
that I can.
That said, there has been much to rejoice in, from the ongoing
construction of our city to the infirm in my temple approaching recovery.
The Cult of Talos attacked us once again, likely hoping to take us by surprise now that
the five are away but they did not expect the Leilon Guard - their barracks compete meant that they have been able to train and
mobilize quickly, pushing the cultists away. It was fortunate that this
building was prioritized. The mood in the town is hopeful and the work
goes swiftly. Truly it seems all things are going well.
Without our protectors here even the bard Tarbin Tul has ventured to the north in search of tales. Lathander forgive me but I am happy of the resulting quiet. May his way be safe and peaceful... but perhaps take a while before it brings him back to Leilon.
